Doug Remembered

From Brian Ferdinando
I have known Doug for over 65 years as both airline colleague and steadfast friend. I have been privileged to have flown with Doug for what, to most people, is a lifetime.

My log book shows I was Doug's Flight Engineer on a Douglas  DC6 from Southend to Malta on 17th March 1961. During the intervening years I had the pleasure of being crewed with Doug many times, our last flight together in a Boeing 747 on February 5th 1988 from Gatwick to Lagos.

I feel very fortunate to have had the experience of knowing a pilot of exceptional ability, a true professional and a gentleman who was respected and admired by all who came into contact with him during his long flying caree

I got to know Doug well in early 70s and we met many times down route over the next decade. I introduced him to several restaurants in Rio well away from the crew favoured Rian.  He was a true gentleman and it seemed that all crew loved to fly with him as their captain. I was much saddened to learn of his passing.

From John Fairclough
In my 34 years of flying experience with BUA/BCAL my most standout person in training and social life was Dougie. He was a true gent, trainer and will always be remembered by me. Rest Peacefully

From Phil Benson
I first met Dougie in September 1979 when I was teamed up with him as my Captain on our DC10 conversion course. The first one that BCal organised at American Airlines' training school in Dallas. I was very impressed with Dougie in all sorts of ways. He was not only an extremely skilled Captain but also a delight to spend time with. Such a gentleman and so considerate of others. I'm very sorry to hear of his passing.
