Caledonian Airways New York 1967 - 1971 then back to London. Zambia 1983 - 1988. Happy days. I was with Travellers Friend in Horsham for a while but we are now living in Ayr Scotland and just loving it. We are a short distance from Gordon Mason and his wife Janet and we are playing lots of golf. Thought that I would mention that we have a condo in a place called Bradenton which is on the golf of Mexico Florida and very close to Sarasota. I would be delighted to rent it out to B.cal people at much reduced cost.
Delighted to see so many old colleagues, would love to hear from anyone who remembers us.
Vivien 'Viv' Jackson
One of the Sales/Marketing gang till 1988. Started up and ran the Apres BCAL Reunion Club for Sales & Marketing friends till handing over to Southern colleagues whose last meeting was yesterday Friday 13th at Wingspan Club - where word was passed around regarding your site thence on to me by long distance phone call. Keep up the good work and if my attic reveals any useful items I will get in touch.
Should anyone want to know my whereabouts and whatabouts - my time with BCAL was not wasted - at 60 (shush) I am attempting/embarking on my HND in IT Communications and Computers!!!
Derek & Linda James
I Joined B.O.A.C. 1958 as Cabin Crew [Steward] Left in 1964, then joined Caledonian Airways in 1965 as Cabin Crew [Steward] Moved to Houston in 1983 as Catering Manger North America until made redundant by B.A. in 1989. We still live in Houston and would like to hear from anybody who remembers us.
Joanna James
Worked at BCAL 1982 to 1988. Still at BA, so far survived the many changes and job cuts. Currently in Marketing but about to move to HR!!
Steve James
I started my apprenticeship with Caledonian /BUA in 1971 as airframe / engine apprentice with Dave Evans, Jeff Heap, Dick Stewart, to name but a few. I'm now working for Trans Atlantic Aviation, an Aviation Group in London
Terry Jeffries
I was a Tug Driver in the Aircraft Handling Unit with BCAL / BA from Oct 1976 until retirement in July 1998.
Mike Jeffs
I was with BCAL from 76 to 88 as a first officer on 1-11 and as F/O and Capt on DC10 until the Murder**** stayed with BA on 747 retired last year. I would love to hear from anyone from those days. I have some old down route photo's may be of interest

I was so sad to hear of the death of Sir Adam. He was an Innovator, an Inspiration and a Gentleman.
After twelve years in the Royal Air Force I joined British United Airways at Gatwick in 1970. I was therefore in at the start of BRITISH CALEDONIAN AIRWAYS, as a Security Officer and Security Investigator and continued there to the end of BCAL and the take over by BA in 1988. I continued as an Investigator with BA until being made redundant in 1991. I have really happy memories of the greatest Airline there ever was and of the wonderful BCAL people I had the privilege to meet and work with both in the UK and at overseas stations. The demise of the happy family of BCAL was a great loss to aviation. Ah....but if history could be changed......I was really pleased to find this site to continue the memory of BCAL, Derek
Chris Jensen (formerly Elvery, nee Middleton)
Have just got back to sunny South Africa from a 2 week visit to the UK (which was also sunny, for a change!!) and have explored this wonderful website - thanks to Jeanne Stephenson (nee Williams, formerly Longland). What a wonderful trip down Memory Lane - tinged with sadness when I read of the death of John Cook. He and Mary attended my first wedding (to Andy Elvery) where he was Andy's best man. I was at LGW from October 1970 - Nov 1980, when I left to come out to SA to get married to Paul Jensen (still married with 3 kids!!). Worked at check in, interline desk and finished up on the Airlink for the last 2 years. Am now in DUR working for a BA subsidiary and have worked for a number of airlines since (all local) but nothing to compare with that wonderful feeling of pride that came from BCAL. We were the best and we knew that we were the best. Have met many passengers since who were familiar with BCAL and they all concur!!!
Am about to start a bed and breakfast business here - all welcome if you fancy a break with some guaranteed sunshine and sea. SA is great - and cheap!!! Would love to hear from anyone who remembers me!!
James "Johnny" Johnson
I was with Eagle from 1957 to 1968 and then Caledonian and BCAL from 1970 to 1988. It is great to see so many familiar names in the guestbook. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in sales and then marketing at Crawley, Haywards Heath and Gatwick. The final three and a half years in Southern Routes were interesting, to say the least. I am happily retired in Emsworth on the south coast and wish everyone well
Liz Johnson nee Lievens
What a lovely way to commemorate Sir Adam and a great airline - BCAL. I started with BUA in 1968 as cabin crew and left in 1974. Rejoined BCAL in Houston, TX in 1981 and worked in the office for David Rushton, then moved to the NYC office and left in 1985. Many fond memories of trips to South America, Africa and Bahrain etc and I used to fly with my old flat mate Chrissie Garcia - who I still see and chat to. I am now living in the USA, Portland, OR and would love to hear from anyone.
David Jones
What a great website - so many familiar names bringing back such great memories. I joined BCAL in March 1985 as a Progress Chaser in Hangar 6. After a few years I managed to gain promotion to Materials Supervisor, running the DC10 Majors (worked opposite Keith Ambridge but then somebody had to !! Only joking Keith if you read this...). Undoubtedly the best working years of my life to date. In my latter years at BA I worked on the Line in both Long Haul and Short Haul Tech Controls, before ending my time as an FLC in the North Terminal Stores. I still remember with great fondness the 'BCAL Freedom Fighters' whose spirit was never broken. Now working for Virgin Atlantic, in the LGW Hangar (Hangar 7 as it used to be known !).
Richard Keast
Hi to everybody, I started in the Airline Business with BUA as an apprentice in 1967,so I was there at the start and finish of that great airline BRITISH CALEDONIAN I am still at Gatwick working for British Airways I would like to hear from any former colleagues. Best regards Richard.
Keith Kennard
I worked in MT Workshops at Gatwick from1978-1988, it would be good to hear from anyone who worked there then, great memories and good times.
Jenna Kent
Had the pleasure of flying this wonderful airline on several occasions to Hong Kong and back when I was a girl. I also remember wanting to become a Caledonian Girl when I grew up !!!!!!!! So sad to know it never happened, so I settled for the next best thing and became a pilot. It is sad to see such a landmark and icon in the aviation world, become a distant memory.
Michael Kidd
I have just learned of this site from a Xmas card from an old friend and former colleague at Caledonian Airways. Many old friends and happy times from my years 1967 - 1977. I note with great sadness the news about Alan Stronach a great boss and dear friend.
Alan Killick (Ex Crewing)
After leaving BA in 1993 I spent 7 years at GB Airways then moved from there in 2000 to SITA near to LHR. I now spend my time demonstrating a Crewing system that we developed at SITA and then training and supporting customer airlines worldwide. Gets me ‘out of the office and off the M25’. Amazing to see how many airlines around the world are still not up to the standard we had in BCal. Most of them have never heard of Cabin Service – the biggest culprits are the Americans who know best of course. If anyone remembers me and wants to get in touch please do via this website and I’ll write back as soon as I can. I attend the Flight Deck reunion most Septembers at the Russ Hill which is a fantastic way to recall the wonderful times we had in ‘The World’s BEST Airline’. Rgds to all, Alan
Keith Knight
I joined BUA in 1961 (wheel bay) and retired from BA 1996 (seat bay) for me the best years were with BCal. A nice friendly company to work for, not to be forgotten.
Gene Kolkhorst
It is with sadness we learn that Gene was lost in a motoring accident in 2008.
Gene's original Guestbook entry
I was the station manager for Western Airlines from the fall of 1980 and until Jan. of 1982. BCAL was our ground handler. I keep in touch with 2 friends, Phil Bowell and Dave Perkins who are still the closest friends I have ever had. Dave just came to visit me here. There was a couple of young ladies that I met [cant remember names] that I would like very much to meet again. I so enjoyed my friendship with so many of your employees. I have such fond memories of my time in the UK.
A message from Phil Bowell
Gene became a BCAL-file when he arrived at Gatwick as the Station Manager of Western airlines - an airline which flew from Denver and Anchorage to Gatwick. Western was handled by BCAL and Gene and I became good friends. After Western was bought by Delta, he retired and bought a Truvalue Hardware store in Mammoth Lakes, California before moving to another store in Butte, Montana. We had some good times together, including a great trip to the the Normandy Beaches and another to Yellowstone National Park. A great guy, sorely missed.
Susan Kriebel /Pockett /Kriebel
Worked with BCAL from Nov '76. With engineering for 5 years and remember I was brought in to work on G-BEBM G-BEBL now slaving away with BA cargo and I was hanging on till the pension was right and the money got good enough to go and I ran from BA in May 2009. I have plans to do nothing except sleep and chat up with all my mates all over the world, and will prob spend a great deal of time in Japan.
Kim Kwong
Greetings from Singapore. I am Kim and I was a secretary to Martin Harewood and then to Jeffrey Youtan from 1972 to 1975 until BCal was closed down by the Singapore government. Hello to Geoff Lord and sorry to hear about Jim Spalding. I would be pleased to hear from Martin, Jeff and those that remember me.
Iain Lachan (Work)
I joined BCAL in 1975 as an Engineering technician Apprentice remaining until the end. I had many colleagues and friends whom I have sadly lost touch with and many questions to ask. I look forward to making acquaintances with all who had a real passion for the company and the history it created. It was a unique experience and will live as very many happy memories.
Dale E Lakin
I worked for B-Cal in IAH and ATL between 1981-1988..I am looking to hear from former employees.
Christopher Lamb
It seems a very long time ago but I joined Caledonian in 1963/4 having been personally interviewed by Sir Adam in an office above a bakers [might have been a butchers] shop in Horley. I recall doing all sorts including flight plans, load sheets and making tea from a freezing cold office at the end of the sole finger at Gatwick. Moved across to Dan-Air after a while doing load sheets for Ambassadors and something to do with newspapers on a Derby Airways DC-3 / C-47?
Long periods at the Gatwick Aero Club [Vic and Chris Townsend] and names spring to mind – Adelaide Campbell, Jeannie Rayside and especially Bob Norris whom, if he is still on this earth, I would love to renew contact. I recall that he moved to Mallorca from Warninglid.
Phil Lancaster Although we were at the northern outpost we still served and enjoyed the crack, right onto the end.
Alan Lane
It is with sadness that we learn that Alan passed away peacefully on January 27th 2009. Our sincerest condolences go out to Alan's family and to his children John and Judith.
Alan's original Guestbook Entry
Would love to hear from any old friends who remember me from my aircrew days (DC4, DC6, Britannia, 111, B707, DC10 )...Air Charter 1954, through to BCAL 1983.
Darlene Lane
I am so pleased to have found this site. I was executive assistant to John Story, EVP of North America during the years 1986 to 1987. I was originally hired as secretary to Gerry Swift. I worked with Marilyn Cook – Peter Barrie – John Stiffler - Alan Stronach (so sorry to hear of his passing) and the whole gang in Houston. Those were some of the best days…I was proud to be a member of the BCAL family! I love the website!
Paul Lane New Entry
I joined BCAL at Gatwick in 1982 as an Engineering Apprentice. On completion of my apprenticeship in 1986 I worked in Hangar 5 until transferring to the permenent nightshift – working in all the hangers (1, 3, 5 & 6) on the entire fleet and third party aircraft, as work dictated. In 1987 I transferred to the Line where we worked on the BCAL fleets and several other operators (Air Zimbabwe, Sabena, Britannia & Virgin). I left to join Iberia at Heathrow in July of 1988 after the takeover – I couldn’t stand the pay cut and shift change!
Bruce Langham
Excellent site and good to hear about so many ex BCAL colleagues. Very sorry to hear that Jim Spalding has died, he was a great character.
Judy Langridge (nee Cannon)
1973 to 1986 - cabin crew. So pleased to have found this site. What fabulous memories come flooding back! It truly was the most remarkable airline with the most remarkable bunch of people I've ever had the pleasure of working with. I have been living in Spain for the last six years with my husband, Ken, and it's fantastic! I would love to hear from anyone who remembers me.
Ros Lauder
I Joined BCAL May '73 and now due to retire July '02 from BA! (Cabin Crew) What a wonderful way to remember and keep in touch. - Will always be pleased to hear from old colleagues and friends.
Elaine Lawrence (nee Watts)
I was cabin crew with BCAL from February 1977-1983 – wonderful days with many memories. For the last 8 years I’ve been with BMI as Special Services Manager at LHR looking after our VIP’s. The industry has changed greatly but bmi reminds me of BCAL in some ways – good people, friendly and always having to try and compete with BA! I would love to hear from Josie Kirkby, Angela Wieska or Laura Bourne if they read this
Karen Leach IAH in res then Account Exec LAX, great memories
Doug Ledingham
Joined BUA 1968 and continued with the group until 1996 when I left BA and joined new entrant British Mediterranean Airways. I met with many old friends at the memorial for Sir Adam, a tragic loss to aviation.
Lynn Leigh (now Clarke)
It's great to see so many familiar names on this site. BCAL was the only Company I ever worked for from when I left college. I spent 13 happy years there working in Tours, Leisure & Group Sales and finally with Dan Brewin on the 7th Floor. I'd love to hear from anyone who remembers me!
Mandy Lenanton (nee BOON)
I flew with British Caledonian from 1977-1981 when I left as a No.1. One of the happiest times of my life!....Would love to meet up with anyone who flew with me! This site brings back the memories and I've still got some of my old uniform to remind me!
Geoff Lewis
I joined BUA. in 1965 as an Aircraft Engineer. It was the best New Year present when Caledonian arrived. Things changed so rapidly it was unbelievable. The Years with BCAL were my best years in aviation having started in Aviation in 1953.We were a great big Family. Which sadly all ended with the arrival of B.A.! The years from then on were my worst in aviation. From 1987 until I retired in 1997.It rapidly got worse. I have been lucky since I retired, if you can call having both knees replaced, surviving cancer, a hip replacement and the list goes on. About a dozen old BUA. engineers get together at the Wingspan every Wednesday just to reminisce. Happy Days
Bob Lillywhite
Joined BUA in 1967, within In Flt Services, catering. Great to be part of the best airline ever. Made redundant in 1988 when BA took over. A sad day for all. Still at LGW with BD on the Virgin account. Have just been taken over by GHI, another part of Gatwick history gone. Good to see so many familiar names on the site. Have now changed direction and am part of the Home Office Border Immigration Agency for the last six years after spending some time at Heathrow and Gatwick working with Alpha Flt Services and Gate Gourmet, but would cherish the opportunity to go back into the industry as I think it a great area to work in
Anders Lindblom
I was a member of British Caledonian staff in the Buenos Aires Branch office. I Started in 1974, where I worked as Sales Rep. Later on as Sales Exec. until the Malvinas / Falkland war when B.Cal had to suspend activities in Argentina and various other cities in South America.
B.Cal was more than a job. My wife always used to say, "you don't go to work to your job, you go to the club". And that was so. We had the most fantastic "family" at B.Cal / Buenos Aires. And lots of friends that one remembers in the South America route. Graham Broadbridge, Bruce Langham, Valerie Houston and lots of other great friends that one worked with during years.
Anne Lindup (nee Highams) Love to hear from old friends
Dave Linsell
My links with BCAL go back to 1976 when I met (and eventually married) one of the Caledonian Girls. Many happy memories, and the airline DEFINITELY was way ahead of its time in both innovation and style - never to be matched since. Does anyone have a copy of the calendar (around 1982 I think) with the girls in various BCAL destinations?
Bob Lister
I joined BCAL in 1980 and enjoyed flying as cabin crew until 1988. A great company to work for.
Alan Lock
I joined BCal in 1973 having just completed 7 years with BEA, man what a difference I felt at home straight away and after 36 years I still have many friends from B-Cal none from BEA.
Nick Lockwood
The news of Sir Adam's death prompted me to "surf" for a BCAL site; I was in Planning and Marketing from 1978-1988; now an independent aviation management consultant.
Cathy Lloyd (nee Wright)
Still flying after 26 years with BA as a Purser at LHR and as most people have said it's definitely not the same. Still got all my old BCAL uniforms although some of them are somewhat smaller than I remember. I have managed to maintain my links with LGW as I am actively involved with the Gatwick Panto which is held at the Hawth Theatre every February. It is a great opportunity to catch up with some old friends Jacqui Radley, Barbara Clough, Elaine Baigent, Sarah Albrow nee Robinson to name but a few. Married to Barry and we are both looking forward to the annual BCAL reunion bash at Russ Hill in September
Elizabeth Lockhart-Mure 22/12/09
I worked for BUA and BCAL from 1966 - 1976. I have very fond memories of my time with BUA, I always felt were just one great big family, on arriving at Gatwick there were always so many faces one knew: Those really were the days - aviation at it's best, it was fun and such a privilege to work with BUA and later BCAL!
Denis G. Long
It is with sadness that we learn that Denis passed away just before Christmas 2002. Our sympathies go to his family and friends. His years with BR saw service in UK, Uganda & Ghana finishing with (1977 to 1988) in Sierra Leone. During all of this period he received tremendous support (particularly when on the tough stations) from so many colleagues.
Herbert "Lofty" Lord ???
I never worked for BCAL however I am currently researching my grandfathers flying career in both the RAF and his subsequent time in civil aviation including time with Caledonian. His name was Herbert Lord, also known as 'Lofty' or
'Bert' and he did 2 stints with Caledonian Airways as a Radio Officer and then Flight Navigator. His first stint was May till October 64' when he was seconded to Caledonian from BOAC and his second was from April 65' through to his retirement in February 73'.
He flew on various aircraft whilst with Caledonian including DC6's, DC7's, Britannias and 707's.
I would love to hear from anyone who may have known him as he passed away in 1987 and I did not get to know too much about him whilst he was around. Contact Simon Lord on thesaint0102@yahoo.co.uk
Geoff Lord
Marvellous site - great memories. Started with BUA, Edinburgh in 1965 then as Station Manager, Monrovia (skippered the Liberian Rugby team !!!), Bahrain and Singapore. Redundant '73 but later re-hired back in Edinburgh then W Africa again. Married (still) Lisbeth (nee Thomas), also Traffic in Edinburgh then with Training LGW. Moved to Australia in '82 where I became national Cargo Manager for SQ - after 6 years consulting for DHL am now back on the right side of the fence and with some old BCAL colleagues in Emirates
Andrew Lothian / Maurice Lothian
My father Maurice was with Caledonian from '65 until'75. He flew DC 7's, Brits and 707's. Finished up as Fleet Manager on the 707's before he finished. He will be 86 in July unfortunately he is rather confused these days. I am a 747-400 skipper with Virgin.
Wim Louwers
I worked for BCal from ’76 till the end, march ’88, latest at Sales & Service Manager in The Netherlands. Since then I enjoyed life but the twelve years in BCal were never beaten
Jan Lowes nee Shrimpton
I had the pleasure to work for BCAL from 1973 to 1977, short but sweet. Over the years I have worked for several airlines but none come close to BCAL.
Frank Lucas
Enjoyed looking trough web site. noticed many names of yesteryear. Joined B.U.A. engineering in June 66 retired June 86 from BCAL It was a good company to work for especially after it became BCAL. All the best to the site and may it go from strength to strength.
Ian Lucas
I started my apprenticeship with BUA and during that time it became BCAL. Found memories of good people and good fun. My career with BA took me down many routes and different jobs. I started working in Gatwick Support Unit(GSU) in hangar 3 sadly no longer there. from there I went on to do various planning roles, Duty Control Engineer which brought me into contact with Flight Operation and Ground Operations for the very first time. This experience was to lead to my final role with BA as a Terminal Engineering Manager, representing Engineering at the Gatwick Centre, a job I thoroughly enjoyed until many I took early retirement in October 2003. Since then I have worked at Northbrook College at Shoreham Airport instructing students' with a view to becoming Licenced Maintenance Engineers. My father Frank Lucas is still going strong at the age of 87. BCAL with live for a very long time yet. 1st April 2009 represents 21 years since it vanished but not forgotten. I hope all my former colleagues are well hope to see some of you in the future.
Dave Lusty
I first joined BCAL Engineering at LGW in 1978, left in 1980 for four years with MAS in Kuala Lumpur but luckily came back to BCAL in 1984. Stayed with BA until retiring, have now lived in Normandy since 2003.
Grahame Mackenzie
Great site! I joined BUA Telecomms in 1970 and served BCAL for the whole of its existence, leaving BA with the forty pieces of silver in '88. It was never going to be the same. Effectively retired now and living in Bembridge on the Isle of Wight. All the best to all ex-BCAL staff, are there any ex-Caledonian House (the staff barracks, not the office block) inmates out there or are you still nursing the hangovers from all those mad parties in the seventies/early eighties?
Tony Mackey
I was proud to be a part of BCAL from 78-87 and long for those days of best customer service and genuine friends at work. The aviation industry lost its shining light when we were "merged" into BA.
Nan MacClennan
It is with sadness we learn that Nan passed away in March 2009, after a long fight with cancer. Our condolences go out to her family and friends. Nan was from Stornaway and was a hostie in the early 70'S then lived in East Africa and married and became Nan DiPiero moved to Boston. Our thanks to Katrina McGeechan for passing on the news who knew Nan as a really lovely person.
Tom Magarry
I worked for BCAL from 1985 to time of takeover by BA. Started as Graduate Trainee & ended up running MT Operations during 88/89. What a time that was !?? If anybody has a "I survived Gatwick 1988' mug I would be willing to pay for it? This is a lovely site and demonstrates just how unique BCAL
was as an airline.
John Mallen A potent reminder of happy days
Peter Mallen
I flew on the inaugural flight to New York from Prestwick on Caledonian. The aircraft was a DC7C "The Star of Robert Burns" and I think Sir Adam Thompson was one of the crew. This is a postscript to my earlier comments: I'd like to hear from any B-Cal people who remember me; I sang at the opening of the Houston and Atlanta routes as well as other occasions at Dallas, Geneva, Gleneagles and Copthorne. Those were wonderful days which I will never forget. I now produce and present programmes for Radio Clyde. My very best wishes to you all.
David Manton
1978 - 1990. Worked in Traffic at LGW and then in KAN and LUN. Since then I have worked with many ex BCAL colleagues around the world and have been in the Middle East for the last five years where I regularly meet up with them and keep the memories alive. Would be great to hear from anyone who remembers me.
Ian Marchant
Wow, what a great internet site. I was with BCAL 1972-1988 mainly in air cargo but occasionally transferred to Pax services and load control.
Renalda M.Markesteijn
I used to work for BCAL at Amsterdam Airport between 1975-1988. It sure was a great company to work for. I am glad I have found this site. Keep up the good work.
Amanda Marks (now Pugh)
I joined Bcal as a stewardess in 1978 and had the time of my life ! Still miss it ...with BA now and all that that entails ! So proud to have been part of the whole Bcal thing. I am living in Somerset now and if anyone wants to get in touch would love to hear from them
Julie Marley (Watkinson) BCAL 1978-1980 Stewardess 707, DC-10 and 1-11
Jeremy Marquand What an unexpected site to find. Anybody out there who remembers me glad to hear from them
Robert Marrill
I happened across your website whilst reflecting on times past. Spent four great years in the development team at Bcal from 1984-1988 working on DC10s including NIUK , autoloand cat 3A cert and spec of A320 (launch customer!). I often wonder what might have been been were events to have taken a different course with BMI, SAS, Lufthansa whereas I joined BA for another ten years before moving on to pastures new in 1998. fondly remembered times.
Roy Marshall
I joined Cale in December 1968 as part of the 'traffic' team. Team? well there was 5 of us. When Cale took over BUA and went to work for the Traffic Overseas department and in '74 was posted to Paris. that was the start of a long career overseas with the airline. Worked in Lagos, Hong Kong, and Riyadh to name a few. Went over to BA and left them in 2002. Still working but not in the airline industry. It's great to see so many names of past colleagues. My wife, Barbara, and I are looking forward to the reunion in April this year. I am so proud to say that I worked for BCAL, probably the best customer service airline ever.
Marshall Massengale
It is with sadness that I acknowledge the passing of the late Sir Adam Thomson, OBE. I learned of this event only very recently through our group of de Havilland DH-106 Comet Jet enthusiasts. If there is anything so remarkable and defining of British aviation, especially the commercial side, it is the unique and fascinating character of its pioneers and leaders. It is certain that neither he nor the magnificent airline he built will be soon forgotten and it is to be hoped most fervently that there will follow those for whom Sir Adam set not only an example, but the standard for excellence.
Bunny Mason
Have read your info about BUA & BCAL with interest. I served with the company and its previous aviation interest i.e. Hunting Clan, from 1955 until 1974. During which time I was Cargo Sales Manager and latterly Commercial Manager Cargo, until leaving the Company during the redundancy of 1974. Would appreciate hearing whether any of my era are still around. I am still going strong, Yours in anticipation.
Ivan Mason
It is with sadness we learn that Ivan passed away on 31st January 2009 at his home in Charlwood, Surrey. Ivan was 82 and leaves his wife Gill and four children and 9 grandchildren. Ivan had worked as a flight engineer and an aircraft engineer in his many years in avaition, working for BOAC, Hunting Clan, BUA, BCal and eventually BA. I had met Ivan and Gill a few times at various events around the southeast and it was a good to get the chance to meet him. Our sympathies go out to his family and friends.
Gill Mason (nee Terrington)
I flew as a hostess/stewardess with Hunting Clan on their Viking services, which was where I met Ivan. I left in 1958 when we got married though Ivan continued on as a Flight Engineer. All four of our children have ended up in aviation - Simon is a manager with Virgin, Tim a 777 pilot with BA, Jane was cabin crew with BIA then with BA for 16 years and Anne is in finance with BA. It must be in the blood!
Gordon Mason
Hello Everyone, Just discovered the site with my son Tom, this is fantastic and it was great to see so many familiar names and friends in the guest book and a great tribute to the late great Sir Adam Thompson. I would just like to pass on my best wishes to all who may remember me and would welcome any e-mails from anyone who remembers me.
I finished up with BCAL in Toronto after 18 years service in 1986. I worked at Gatwick for Caledonian Airways and latter with BCAL in Scotland, (the best 18 years of my life!) Friends made that I will never ever forget. I set up my own PR company and was asked serve as Marketing Director for Scottish European Airways where I retired again, after which I worked with the board of the Rothesay Winter Garden, which was great fun and then lead me into a successful political career serving Argyl and Bute council for two terms as convener of social work and housing for the region as well as being appointed a Justice of the Peace. Still keep in touch with Tony Cochlin and having now left the island of Bute and living in Ayr we are just around the corner from Ray and Pat Jackson and Peter Mallan. BCAL was the highlight of my working career, truly a great company and family!
Kris Massie (formerly Van Woenssel) 01/09/08
Delighted to have found the site while having a stroll through 'Google' and anything to do with BCAL after a lovely lunch with Sandra Gosling and our 'catching up' chatter. I started in Reservations with BCAL in Kitwe, Zambia when the office opened in July 1976 and BCAL commenced flights to and from Lusaka. Reservations was manual in those days and bookings were taken on cards and transmitted to BCAL Gatwick via Telex Machine. I spent 5 years in that office, our Managers were George Mitchell and subsequently Keith Gascoigne. Also Alan Varley who was Manager Zambia at one stage. On meeting Steve and Dot Tester, both of CRC Gatwick (terrapin building!) and subsequently Caledonian House, they were instrumental in my obtaining a transfer to England. Another 5 happy years part in Reservations and the other in Hotel Reservations (the oil rig personnel to and fro Aberdeen to Houston) with Pat Richardson as she was then. On the demise of BCAL, I refused to transfer to BA - just couldn't do it. Ended up with other airlines - Virgin Atlantic and Air Europe who also 'bit the dust' and finally another 5 years with Caledonian Airways in Customer Relations before leaving the airline scene. BCAL was the best company I have ever worked for. We had enormous fun apart from hard work of course. I have lost touch with many but still see Sandra Gosling and Sue Tangstrum and correspond with Renalda Markesteijn (ex Schiphol Ticket Desk) in The Netherlands. I occasionally run into Hilary Moon in Horsham as she was then, before her marriage. Everything about the site is great! Well done!
Margaret Mattocks ( Nee Maycock) Hi. I joined BCAL in 1976 and would love to hear from anyone who remembers me.
Malcolm McCluskey
BCAL 1976-1988 now B.A. Great to see such a fine set-up for the only one "who never forgot you had a choice". Keep up the good work. This still a great site for what really was the "Passengers favourite airline." Keep up the good work.
Harry Millar
Nice to bring back memories ! ex British Caledonian Helicopters - Ground Services Controller which included responsibility for the mainline service ABZ-MAN-LGW.
Alistair Miller
Joined B Cal in 1972 as Advertising Manager, working with Nic Boise for 11 years. Wonderful memories of new route launches and of course our “Caledonian Girls” ad campaign which is still talked about to this day. Hope people who remember me will get in touch
Bob Miller
Brings back some memories! I joined BUA in 68 in crew rostering later Crew Scheduling: survived the MERGER with Caledonian, left at BA takeover. Rose coloured specs or not still thought they were great days. Would appreciate contact from old friends.
Avril Milne
Joined April 1971 until May 1988 when absorbed by British Airways, still flying but it's not the same!

It is with sadness that we learn that Paul was lost on 12th May 2010 in a tragic accident at his home in Horley, he was 71 years old.

A very sad moment for Aviation and on my birthday too.. I used to check in those DC7s and Britannia flights as well as travelled many a thousand miles on 1-11s/707s He fought, some he won against all odds, and was the businessman's choice on many a route. Great lads and lasses on board too, who upheld the tradition of service. They are all missed, Martin
Jeff Milton
Greetings to all old friends and colleagues. Joined BUA in '64 and was working in Houston, after spells in Nigeria, Brazil and HQ when the merger was announced...now retired and living in Villamartin on the Costa Blanca for the past 4 years. Passing through? All welcome
Alan and Jan Mitchell (nee Anderson) 28/08/08
Jan and I joined “Cally” in early 1968, Jan as Air Cabin Crew while I started in Crew Scheduling. I stayed for 20 years having 3 careers, which took me into Operations Control & Crewing; Personnel and finally Passenger Services. All 3 were so different challenging and rewarding. Jan worked for about 2 years as Cabin Crew then joined the Sales office before leaving to raise a family. Jan did return on occasions to act as cabin crew who were affectionately known as “Golden Oldies” “High Mileage Boilers” and “Blue Rinse Brigade”.
We now reside on the south coast both working for our Church organization, Jan in Hove and me in Eastbourne. Our favourite pastime now is being Granddad and Gaga (our Grandsons name for Jan - those of you who know her will understand why) ! We believe the whole web site is testimony to the type of atmosphere created by the airline and to the people who made it the great organization it was. Even now my home office displays the framed scroll “British Caledonian - A chapter in history in which we proudly served” so brilliantly drawn up by one of the Engineers and a framed photograph of Gatwick Airport 1988 version. Our Grandson loves to play with the three model aircraft I have all in BCAL colours each time he visits us. Happy days and a privilege to have been associated with it!
John Mitchell
Nice to know that the best airline ever is still remembered
Alan Moffatt
I joined BCAL as an apprentice engineer in 1977 to the end. I'm the youngest of three brothers who also worked at BCAL. drop us a line if you remember me or my brothers.
Jim Monaghan
Hello to all you lucky people. Lucky because we all worked for such a fine, fun and fantastic airline. Such high standards we achieved in all departments, such pride we had in our Company, yet so much fun and friendship. Even Lagos was fun. Hoping to see a few smiling faces in September at Russ Hill. I was a F/E B707 and DC10
Mick Morgan
"I joined BUA in Sept '63 on their first 5 Year Indentured Apprenticeship scheme with 5 others. Went to Brooklands Technical College, Weybridge with Vickers Apprentices, as there wasn't enough to fill a class from BUA. Joined Dave Sturney in Las Palmas for 6 months at the end of the Apprenticeship turning round the South American VC10's, and the West African 1-11's. Returned to Gatwick at the end of the 6 months, got Electrical Licences on the 1-11,and B707, and became an Avionic Supervisor on the Ramp. I remained in that role, with British Caledonian, and then BA, becoming a Fleet Technical Engineer before taking early retirement in October,2003. In the 40 years I worked on the Britannia, Viscount, and DC6 through to the B747-200, and B777. Regards and best wishes to all those I had the pleasure to meet and work with."
Lynda & Steve Morris
Great to see we are not the only ones who remember BCAL so fondly....pls pass on our e mail address to anyone who remembers us
Neil Morrison
Joined in Summer 1965 as the Crewing assistant to Reg Farrell and Selwyn Jones. Operations Manager at that time was Tosh Parlane. With the Operations Director of Stew Calder, Chief Pilot Roy Hermes and Eric Goodyear (who died just recently) as Chief Flight Engineer. Left Aviation just prior to the merger of Caledonian with BUA. Many of the names on the list that appear on the guestbook are familiar to me from those days. Now a retired Banker an living locally in Crawley. Regards to all from those far off but memorable days.
Tony Morse
I was asked to be a consultant to BCAL in 1983, advising on group and conference development. After a year I joined that wonderful airline as marketing manager of Leisure and Group Sales until just before the take-over happened. Without doubt, my time with BCAL was one of the happiest of my working life and I have many fond memories of those days.
Richard Muñoz 03/08/09
Joined BCal in 1974. Started in the sales dep. than moved to tariffs, later to the ticket desk and finally to reservations as a supervisor. Excellent days, lovely company and people to work with. Can remember very good times with Steve Brett, Caren Anderson, Bruce Langham and many others. Now its 27 year that we left BCal and still miss it, and never find another job like that.
Julie Murphy (now Lennon) 06/10/08
I Joined BCAL as a Stewardess between 1970 - 1973. I shared a house with Claudia Auston and Frances Lightfoot in Three Bridges for some of the time. Where are you Ladies ? Ray Stein was on my induction course at LGW.
John Musynske
I worked for BCAL cargo in JFK from start up in 1985 to the "merger" in 1988. I continued with BA Reservations at The Bulova Center until the site was closed in 1999. I took the buy out and have worked in aviation since, but nothing matches the "BCAL Days"!!!! I would love to hear from my old colleagues especially the Old Team from JFK; Phil Bowells' sales and operations team and Neil Warringer's PAX Svc team. I would also like to hear from LGW/LHR Imports (if you guys are still talking to me after many JFK export escapades!) especially Mark Palmer (LHR IMPS). Best wishes to all my BCAL Colleagues....you are all sorely missed!
Jim Myers
I worked in London sales from 1975 - 1978, fantastic memories. Will be great to hear from anyone who remembers me.
Marion Nash (Nee Biggen)
So sad to hear about Sir Adam....What a lovely man! We even named our son after him!! It's great to see website that's keeping those treasured memories alive......Hello to everyone who may remember Paul and me. I joined in 1972 until 1986 mostly in passenger services and ramp. Paul joined 1973 in reservations, CRC, Res.Services and cargo until 1988
Peter Nettlefold
An old colleague, Finlay Jones, let me know about the sight. It brings back such good memories for me. I joined BUA way back in 1966 and went right thru to 1989 when I took the money and ran!! all the way to SA. If there is anyone out there still it would be great to get in touch again. I'm sure there are a lot of the old LGW Pax svc staff who read this. Give me a buzz.
Charlie Newble
Joined Transair in 1960 working on line as a engineer happy days, after a few name changes retired from BA in 2002 but still keep my hand in by giving the aircraft at Tangmere Museum some TLC.
Neil Nice
I joined in 1980 and stayed until BA took over ( merged!! ) and these were my happiest working years, it was like one big happy family. I still work with ex BCAL workers at BA and the good times are only a memory now. I was in the cleaning section working as a leader/trainer. This is a very good website dedicated to the memory of a really great airline.
Bill Nightingale
Very interesting. I recognise many names from the past. I worked for BCAL from 1969 (then Caledonian Airways) until 1987. A couple of months before the merger with BA. Started in Crewing then Ops and finally Pax Services/ Ramp before moving to Emergency Procedures. Moved to Tenby in 1987 and bought a guest house. After 15 years sold and bought another guest house in Scarborough, Brambles Lodge no discounts, but all will have a warm welcome and I would appreciate e-mails from anyone who remembers me. If you twist my arm I could do 5% off !!!!!!!!
Robert (Bob) Norris
I joined Jersey Airlines at the Beehive, checking-in passengers to fly from the grass airfield in De Havilland Heron’s and Rapides. I was pressed into joining Cunard Eagle by Vic Debenham; first as a cargo rep, then charter sales, then passenger rep under John Lovegrove. John de la Haye, Frank Hope and others were also with Eagle and soon left to start Caledonian Airways. Bernard Fisher pulled me out of Cunard Eagle to join Caledonian in their Horley HQ, where I replaced John Hughes as charter rep. Spent time signing IT services with various tour operators, at the time operating DC-7C’s, of which we had one. Not mentioning some dates as this 74 year-olds’ memory is no longer the steel-trap of old. Wardair asked me to open a London office and Max Ward went on to not take everybody’s advice and started 727 charters on the North Atlantic and was successful. Both on the ground and in the air, Wardair was the nearest anybody came to offering the high quality of service BCal had, and this was also a happy airline.
One day Frank Hope and Dennis Standen interviewed me at Gatwick and I was soon on my way to Toronto, to open a Caledonian office with my assistant Jean Docherty. Being kicked from behind by Ian Ritchie, we (NYC- John Sykes and LAX- Reg Farrell) soon had a huge North Atlantic charter operation now that whatever statute of limitations had expired. I look back in wonder tat some of us didn’t end up sewing mailbags. After being in Toronto long enough to acquire a Canadian passport, there was this merger between Caledonian and BUA, and I was dragged back to LGW, with Rohan Alce taking over the Toronto office. I was moved around from North Atlantic sales to Central and East Africa and then to South Atlantic sales which enabled me to spend weekends in Rio, where I was raised.
While floating around Central Africa I did a favour for Pedro Prats, finding him the Lusaka Pamodzi Hotel half-built, which he took over and opened for Caledonian Hotel Management. This piece of serendipity led him to put me to work in his Palma HQ where I went in 1977 and from where I retired from in 1999, having learnt to speak Spanish. My thanks to Martin Harewood who told me about this site and I would of course be pleased to hear from any old friends and colleagues.
Mick Nunn
I had many happy years (1969-1988) working for BUA/BCAL and made many good friends, now retired living in Shropshire.
Roger Olden
I joined BCal as an Engineering Supervisor in August 1977 from BOAC/BA who I had joined on leaving the RAF in April 1969. The change was like a breath of fresh air. My new colleagues in the Engineering Department displayed a pride in the company and work ethos which was sadly lacking in BA. Expertise, job interest and overall technical competence were clearly evident. During 1983 I moved from base to the ramp as an Assistant Station Engineer Avionics. I stayed on after the "Take Over" in 1988 (It was NOT a merger) and left BA in January 2000. Of my 31 years in civil aviation the years at BCal were without doubt the most enjoyable and I would'nt have missed any of them for the world. Roger had a DC10 model made, its a super model, see it here Roger's DC10 Model.
Judith Oliemans (now Tarry)
Great site! I flew with BCal from 1978 till 1986, what a fantastic time it was. After that I got married (got divorced last year) and raised three children, Nikita, Tiana and Jake. We lived in Spain and Holland, where I am still living now, north of Amsterdam. Through your site I was reunited with my very best friend after 18 years, Sally Lewis; like seeing family again. Also got in touch with a few others, so thank you for the site!
Lydia Oreegal (using my sons email)
Hello I worked with BCAL in Caracas from '77 to '85 at that time of the merger I continued to work for BA and presently work for them at JFK. I would love to hear from anyone.
Robert (Bob) Orridge
My son found this site months ago and is fed up with passing messages from old friends. I Joined Transair in 1960 and spent 28 years at Gatwick with BUA and BCAL mainly in Operations Control as well as overseas postings. A Fine web site and a great way of finding old colleagues from the Best Airline ever !
Paul Osborne
Great to see so many familiar names from the good old days, so much fun without the hassle. Would love to hear from any one who remembers Sue and I .
Sue Osborne
Great site - it gave me a lump in the throat. Those were the days, there will never be another BCAL so it's really good that someone has taken the time to compile this site. I guess there are a lot of people who have the same fond memories of the company. Keep the memory alive !
Neil Pakey
I joined BCAL as a temp in 1979 at Prestwick and stayed until 1984. Although we only had a weekly Guttersloh flight and the BR568 707 freighters from IAH, we were also a top handling agent for many of the Canadian airlines like Wardair and Worldways as well as Flying Tigers on the freight side. Several of our ground staff went on to fly from Gatwick; others transferred locally. My mate Garry Burns went onto ATC at Prestwick and Paul Hunter later flew with Airtours last I knew. Other names that spring to mind include Jackie Burns, Dorothy Harding, Tricia Welsh (Young), Craig Hunter, May Horton (who was BA groundstaff in EDI till last year or so), Mary Wilson, Nick Duck, Lyn Valentine, Shona Ritchie, Fiona, Gillian, Carole……..apols if I have missed you! Alex Boyd was our Duty Officer with Craig Hunter snr our Station Manager. I went onto work with Air Seychelles for a bit but largely I have spent my post-BCAL years on the airports side.
Dennis Palmer I was an Engineer from 85 to the the BA takeover in 88. Still with BA at Gatwick.
Tony Pannell
Joined Transair in 1959 at the New Gatwick Airport, became British United thence British Caledonian, remained until BA takeover. Worked in ground services, overseas contracts. Sales and marketing in UK and Liberia and Zambia thence to BCAL Helicopters and finally to Caledonian Aviation Services. Since then have been self employed as a consultant, finally in partnership with a Swedish colleague working in Denmark. I retired and moved to Devon (Paignton) some 4 years ago. My Wife Sylvia (nee Wigley) ex Hunting Clan and BUA airhostess celebrated her 80th birthday this year. Kindest regards to all old friends and colleagues
Simon Parnell
I was with BCAL engineering at Gatwick from August 1983 until the end. Moved on to BA, Caledonian, Flying Colours and now JMC. Still see some old faces around the airport from time to time. Best wishes to everyone.
Ron Paterson (work email) Home Email
I joined BCal at EDI in Dec 1976 (from Servisair so I only had to step over the baggage belt to change offices). I was interviewed initially by Peter Steel who right up to retiring reminded me that it was all his fault! A great guy. Worked for Neil Warringer - also in the pics. I have lots of happy memories of EDI as it was a great place to work and there were some fantastic people to work (and play) with. I used to hoon around on motorbikes with Brian Aitchison, fix cars in the cargo shed with Jack Williams and hang around in the workshops with the engineers - Alan Cairns, Andy Band, the two Georges and Fred Kirk were stalwarts and taught me a lot about spanners! Anybody remember Pat Hoey ??
I eventually moved to Load Control LGW in Oct '84. I had a stint in Training where I again worked with Brain Aitchison until he went overseas and I moved to Aircraft Dispatch in Apr '88 (BA merger). I then moved around from Ops to Aircraft Services, to Passenger Services and culmintated in Manager Central London Terminals. I jumped ship from BA in 2000 and worked for another company at LGW until Sep '01 when the business was decimated. I now work in local government managing the road safety team for West Sussex which might come as a shock to anyone who remembers me on bikes in the seventies ! I'm still riding bikes and amongst others still have the one I owned when I was at EDI. I live 10 miles away from Brian Aitchison (is he following me?). Brian is also still active with motorbikes and we're even planning a trip to Scotland in June. Eventually married Angela McConville (check out that pic from the town office !) and we have a 17 year old daughter who's at college but now looking at Uni and already costing me a fortune. Would like to hear from anyone who has memories of EDI.
Jim Patrick
Joined Caledonian 1970 ,Flight Watch Sussex House. Moved to Crewing for 8 years then into Cargo Sales Based in Manchester. Bailed out with the merger ,took the money and went Flying Commercially. Been with Air UK/KLM Cityhopper for 14 years operating from North of England. Its great to see all those familiar names. Hope to hear from some of you now I have discovered this site
Marcel Pajuelo-Schwartz
In 1979 worked for BCAL in CCS for a short time. I had worked for BOAC, which became BA, but when I re-joined it was BCAL but same staff. I moved back to the US and since 1982 I have been in California.
Mike Payne
I worked for BUA, BCAL and finally BA from Jun 61 until I retired Jul 96. Employed in Engineering for all of that time. Now living happily in NW Florida, downing many a cold beer with former BUA apprentice Eric Hardy! (Ex BUA Engine Bay/Laker Airways).
Rhoda Pearman
I joined BUA in January 1971 - a day I will never forget. British Caledonian took BUA over so hence I became a Caledonian girl. I am still flying with British Airways and have been based at LHR for the last 8 years. Looking forward to meeting up with you all at the next Reunion.
Noel Peazold
Just to say how mush I enjoyed my time working for such a great company 1964 - 1997. Nice to see some old friends names.
Cherry Perkins formerly Wells (nee Sparks)
Ex-colleagues will remember me, having joined BUA in 1964 and was secretary to John Grant/Mike Reynolds/Derek Richardson/Vic Sheppard in Passenger Services, then onto Cabin Services with Roy Roffler, from where I retired in 1982 when Dave was posted to Dallas Fort Worth Airport. I regret to report that Dave passed away in January 2007, having been suddenly taken into hospital whilst we were in our holiday home in Spain. He had a heart by-pass, which led to complications and, regrettably, he did not recover. I have had two years now to come to terms with my loss and continue living in Spain, having recently met a nice, understanding, man. . My maiden name was Sparks and then Wells after my first marriage. Dave and I were married in 1982, having been together since 1976, Pleased to hear from all friends.
Dave Perkins
It is with sadness we learn that Dave passed away in January 2007, having been suddenly taken into hospital whilst with his wife Cherry at the family holiday home in Spain. Our condolences go out to his family and friends.
Dave's original Crewroom entry
"Great site to view and to find old friends. I joined Channel Airbridge 1961 at Southend, transferred to Gatwick Ops BUA/BCAL, passenger services. Overseas postings inc BRU LOS BAH DFW ROB. Took early retirement in 1988."
Mike Pettit
Great to stumble across this. I worked on the ground for BCAL from day one to the very end. Started with the original Caledonian Airways in 1968 (Sussex House, Crawley) and was Airport Manager Lagos when taken over by BA.
Caron Phillips (nee Holman)
[Alias 'Aunty'] joined Feb 77 into PAX services. Went on to become an acting asst supervisor, charter control, cashiers and finally scheduling. I left in March 93. Married cabin crew member Dave Phillips and we now have 1 son. Even today I still miss the people I worked with. What a great airline we worked for and if i had the chance to do it all again the answer would be 'YES PLEASE'. Thanks everyone for some great memories.
Roger Phillips 01/11/08
I served with BUA then BCAL in R & D Dept originally with Alistair Pugh, Des Mansfield, Ken Waterman, Frank Skinner, Ranald Noel Paton etc then moved to Interline in '71 with Bill Rothera, Pat Barrass, Liz Holiday, Jane Archer, Brian Mitchell and others. I went out to Gulf Air in July '75 to take over from Bill in Gulf Air where I stayed for 16 years, greeting a lot of ex BCAL people over the years. I went to my first reunion last Friday (13th Oct) and was overwhelmed by how many of those present I recognised and was recognised by! Time seems to have stood still. It was a very happy evening and my thanks to Audrey and Diedre for all their efforts. I welcome any contact from former colleagues, both from within BCAL and our Interline contacts, here's to the next reunion!
David "Monty" Phythian
A truly good tribute website to a group of dedicated employees. Started in cargo then on to Flight Planning and Dispatch. Started 1984 and stayed there through the take over until 1996. Still remain in aviation having moved to Belgium 1996 with Eurocontrol. Married to Christine Riley [Cabin crew 1984-1999] - who finally stopped flying.
Mike Platt
Worked in Sales for BCAL from around 74 to 80 both in the UK and Zambia. Had some great times and met some great people. Part of my heart will always be in BCAL. Now I am MD of BTI UK sometimes known as Hogg Robinson a Business Travel Agency.
Robert (Bob) Pomroy
Joined as an apprentice with BU(CI)A in Jersey in 1963 . Transferred to Gatwick as a fitter thanks to Mr Bristow in 1968. Continued with BUA until taken over over by Caledonian and remained in service with BCAL and BA eventually as a LAE until taking early retirement October 2003.
Peter Popp
I worked for BCAL cargo at JFK 1985 great airline, great people I recall now how proud I was to work for such a great company. I will always have great memories of my days with BCAL. My family and I just returned from a wonderful summer by the ocean enjoying each other and our new God daughter as well as fantastically fresh sea food and some excellent wines..but it was also most enjoyable to be able to have a couple of warm and nostalgic conversations with old colleagues...all in all a great summer.
John Potter
My name is John Potter, staff number 65056, and I joined BCAL. in June 1976 as cabin crew. I am still flying out of Gatwick as a CSD on long haul with BA. BCAL was best airline to fly with and was a great family to belong to.
Lyn Povey (nee Wilson)
Hi there, I am an ex cale stewardess circa 1968 - 1973. Remember with particular fondness the uniforms and the unbeatable VC10. Would love to hear from other old Cale girls.
Charles Powell
I worked for BCAL for 17 years. Good info you are producing
Laurie Price
The spirit of BCAL lives on in all those that worked for the company. The former BCAL team, affectionately known as the BCAL mafia or "CALE NOSTRA" provide a quite amazing network. Long may it continue. With best wishes to all my former colleagues.
Alan Proudfoot
I worked in Purchasing at Gatwick from the early 80's through to the merger but left as I decided to return to Scotland. This forced a move away from the airline industry but I ended up being a customer for the next twenty years travelling all over the world. Oh that BCal still existed during those years. No-one else came close to the service BCal provided. I am retired now and live most of my life in Spain but it is funny that whenever I am asked what I did during my working life the first thing I mention is the time with BCal. It was too short but I enjoyed almost every minute. If there is anyone out there from Purchasing or anyone who remembers me please get in touch.
Nigel Quiney
I joined in 1979 as a Airframe/Engine Technician in Hangar 3 and continued in base maintenance until 1982 where upon I moved down to the line on Shift 4. Such happy days, and I repeat what I have read on the website that those years were the best and most formative of my career. I left in 1984 to become an expat in Saudi Arabia with Saudia. I did this for 2 years and then came back to Gatwick to work for Dan Air.
Cathy Quinn
I joined Caledonian Airways at the end of May 1970, This was when Caledonian had the charter for Qantas. So the start of my flying I was off to Australia, Singapore, Kuala Lumper and Karachi. Along with a few other hosties, I spent an interesting evening stapling press statements together telling of the take-over of BUA. This was in Sussex House Crawley, so we all ended the evening with drinks, excitment and a little sorrow before the news was relesed the next morning. I left BCAL in August 1986. I still fell very lucky to have worked for this wonderful company at the best time. I look forward to the 40th reunion, and remember the 10th at the Brighton Center. I am now a director of a property company, but I still travel a lot, but most of the time by ship (I never learned to pack light).
Rita Quinn
I joined BUA in 1968 and left the newly formed British Caledonian in 1987. Orginally joined the Cabin Services Training Dept., was a Route Controller and then a Cabin Staff Supt., the last period of my time was in Marketing. All in all, an interesting and enjoyable time.

Ian McIlwrick Posted by his son Andrew McIlwrick
My father was the account manager at Rex Stewart & Associates Limited in Glasgow, that produced advertising for BCal thru the 1970's and possibly into the early 1980's. Some of the slogans on that page such as "We never forget you have a choice” were actually penned by my father. I remember him proudly showing them to us in Jersey airport on a family holiday - by BCal of course. Sadly my father passed away in 2003, but I am sure he would have been delighted to see you keeping the BCal memories going as he had such close ties to the airline. One of his hobbies was painting, and as well as painting many aircraft of BCal (and many others - even BA ! ) he was commissioned by the airline for several years to paint the 12 pictures that featured in their corporate calendar.
My own memories of BCal are; flying on my very first ever flight - to London in 1976 whilst aged 9, as a gift from Mr Gordon Mason, the BCal Scottish manager for the work that my father did at Rex. We actually went on a day trip to Brighton ! The aircraft was G-ASTJ, a BAC 1-11 : sadly I used to collect aircraft registration numbers when a child, and that one is etched on my memory. Travelling to Florida in 1982 from Gatwick via Atlanta - again as a gift to the family from BCal. The flight we were booked on was overbooked, and as we were non-paying passengers we were offloaded. The next day we flew out first class on a DC-10. I can still remember where I sat on the plane more than 25 years later, and visiting the cockpit to see the crew and the controls. Eating carved meat with metal cutlery and watching adults sip champagne before taking off ! Collecting many BCal aircraft models and building a toy Glasgow or Gatwick airport ! Also, visiting airshows such as the Prestwick International and Farnborough International as guests of you guessed it - BCal.

I worked as an Auntie (Children's Escort) from 1981 to 1990. I had a wonderful time, made many friends and saw some wonderful places during my time with BCAL. I still meet up with the old BCAL Aunties at our annual reunion.
Brian McIntosh I was in Security, from 1980 to when B Cal merged with BA.
