Moira Irvine (now O'Reilly) 15/08/15
I joined BUA at Renfrew Airport in January,1966. There were only 3 ground receptionists, Moira Dempster (McGinty), Mhairi Gilchrist (Lingard) and me. We started at Renfrew when the Interjet Flights to GLA/LGW began. Tony Elverson was the Station Officer, Willy McKenna the Duty Officer (both ex British Eagle) and load controllers Neil McMullen and Sandy Christy. These were fabulous times. We worked long hours and had heaps of fun. We were “banished” to terminal 2 along with British Eagle and we had a little bus to shuttle the pax from Terminal 1 which was the domain of BEA. In May 1966 the new Glasgow Airport opened and many more staff were employed. I transferred to BUA, LGW in 1967 and left in April, 1968 to be cabin crew with BEA/BOAC until 1971. In 1971 I married a Qantas pilot and moved to Australia where I still reside. I live in Albury, NSW which is 300kms north of Melbourne.
I see Chris Aitchison mentions Peter Steel employing him at EDI. Peter came from England to work at GLA when the new airport opened and many more staff were employed. Peter and his wife Carol are well and living in England. I remain great friends with Moira Dempster. Our times with BUA at Glasgow were very special.
I moved with Mhairi Gilchrist to work with BUA, LGW in late 1967 and I went on to fly with BEA/BOAC until 1971. Mhairi remained ground staff at LGW for a number of years. In 1971 I married a Qantas pilot and moved to Australia where I still reside. I live in Rutherglen in Victoria, an excellent wine area and the second oldest (after the Barossa) in Australia. If any of the BUA/BEA/BOAC people find themselves in this part of the world do drop in.
Arthur Isted 26/04/14
Arthur, father of Bob and Lynda, was the Manager BUA and later BCAL, Security Services. Sadly he died suddenly one evening whilst on duty and walking from the South Terminal to the BCAL Base. When he was buried in Horley BCAL Security Officers formed a guard of honour recalls Derek Jenkins.
Bob Isted 27/03/14
Sadly Bob, a former BCAL commercial manager, has passed away. Our sincere condolences to Bob's family, friends and former colleagues. After BCAL, Bob went on to work with a number of other old colleagues for Continental Airlines. His sister, Lynda Isted, was secretary to the BCAL legal director, Hugh Garety; recalls Tony Cocklin.
Lynda Isted 20/02/23 Lynda Remembered
Sadly, after a long illness, it’s with great sadness that I have to report the death of Lynda Isted who passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 11 2023. Lynda started off her working life with B.CAL following in her father Arthur’s footsteps and then joined by her brother Bob several years later.
Lynda's crewroom entry from 12/11/12: I was very sad to hear the news about Sir Adam, which prompted me to visit the site. I worked for BCAL for 17 years, finally as Secretary to the Legal Director (Hugh Garety) on the 7th Floor at Caledonian House. I have many happy memories of my time at BCAL and was delighted to find a site which can bring back some of those memories.
