I joined BCal in 1977 (Load Control), which, at first, I found daunting. However after the first couple of months I seemed to get the hang of it. I have never worked with such a curious mix of people but I'm glad to say the following six years were possibly the most memorable of my working life. A born romantic, I loved the atmosphere of 'living and breathing' the aircraft and the knowledge of their destinations. Less exciting was the experience of 'the mailjet' which in the winter usually involved sitting in an unheated Ford Escort desperately trying to get my brain to work as I tried to calculate the weight and balance.
Another 'discomfort' was having to wear the uniform peaked cap. Honestly, I hated that thing! (I say 'thing' but in reality it was many fold as I would delight in leaving my latest on the flight deck of a long-haul flight and grin deliciously as I watched the chosen aircraft haul my despised hat out of my life for the next few days. Alas the RDO would eventually drag me in his office for a telling off and a replacement cap. The life expectancy of my hats were measured in weeks rather than months. Looking back now, I realise how lucky we were to have such a good team. There was genuine kindness from the number ones and supervisors who would occasionally announce a 'job and away' to some of the Load Controllers who had no more flights to do but at the time I think we came to expect it I'm afraid.
There were also times of great stress when we heard a supervisors voice (strangely was often Bill Llewellen (forgive the incorrect spelling) thunder through the office "WHO is doing the Houston?!" and yours truly would joyfully join the throng echoing the question (as I played pool-badly) only to discover it was in fact I who had forgotten the flight. There would then be absolute mayhem and as a Weight and Balance sheet would be whipped out and a dozen different hands would all work together to make the necessary calculations while another raced to get a car ticking over outside Concorde House and our honourable Supervisor would lie through his teeth over the squark box as he insisted the hapless Load Controller was, indeed, already at the aircraft. So many memories and so many 'late ships papers'!
I now live in Queensland Australia (having had a few years in New Zealand and a dozen years in Devon after my daughter was born) and although I've had a few interesting jobs it's always my 'BCal days' that make me smile. I miss those days and the laughs we all had. I would love to hear from any of my fellow Load Controllers.

It was a wonderful Memorial Service to Sir Adam and so nice to meet up again with old friends. Yes, it is an excellent idea to start this page. I hope you will receive many ex-BCAL visitors! I will certainly pass the message on to those I still see. Kind regards to anyone who remembers me. I joined BUA in September 1965, continued with BCAL and then BA and am now retired. What a wonderful family we have in BCAL! I am still in contact with may ex-colleagues. Viv Izzard, Joyce Branson, Guy LeSueur. Lyn Hutton (Barnard), Barbara Patterson, Keith Farmer. Recently met up with Dedrie Drewett and Sylvia Morant at a milestone birthday gathering for Viv Izzard! Last year (November 2003). Mrs Money Monk died (cashiers LGW) - I spent many a happy hour with her in Truro. I have visited the site before, but this is the first time I have made contact. I worked in CRC, PTS's at LGW, London Ticket desk - both Victoria and Regent Street - Field Sales S.W England (George Scowen Sales Manager) for 6 years - finally Agents Enquiries/Fares at Caledonian House. Now live in Lincolnshire having retired on ground of ill health from Railtrack! BCAL gave me the best years of my life and great lifelong friends. Would love to hear from people who knew me in the "good old days". Update: Bought a house in France 2005, now live part of the time there. Lynn Barnard (Hutton) lives with her family close by.

An excellent piece of work. A history that was so much a part of my life from 1970 (BUA) to the end of BCAL .... plus one year with British Airways after the takeover. A tremendous effort! It must have taken a lot of dedication and research. Keep it up and lets hope the site is well viewed with contributions from around the world!

I was in engineering with Airwork - BUA - BCal from 1955 to 1988, stayed with BA until 1994 when I retired. BUA and BCal were both good airlines, which is more can be said for BA! I knew your dad very well Dave, and one of the lasting memories I have of Ron was the time we spent at Long Beach on the DC10, as we invariably had too many jars! I was on line or outstations for most of my working life, and met Dennis Long and his family when I did a stint in Uganda, Idi Amin was causing havoc at the time and Dennis was quite a help to me and my family. Sorry to hear (belatedly) that he has passed away. Regards to the many names on your tribute sheet that I worked with, in one way or the other.
Jan Adelsbury 28/11/09
Joined BCal cabin crew in 1978 and had the most amazing time till the merger in '88. Stayed with BA as CSD at LGW till 2001 then defected to LHR and finally retiring Dec 2009. My whole career has been wonderful and that's mostly down to the crews I've had the privilege of working with -plus of course the odd beach and bar!
Brian Aitchison
I was taken on by Peter Steel on the 6th May 1974 at EDI and finally left to work at GLA in '78. Ray Hunt was the first person at EDI to wear a Tartan Jacket, while Jack Williams and I stayed in the black uniform. I didnt change to a tartan jacket until I moved to the Training Section (Fleming Way, Crawley) at LGW in '84. Between '74 and '77 I was, what they used to call, a Station Officer which covered Load Contol,Coupon Control and Baggage Services. I then moved into Cargo (EDI) from 77 to 78/79, when I moved back home to Glasgow and became the Cargo Supervisor of the new Cargo Unit until '84, when I moved to LGW as a Cargo Training Officer, where I stayed till the end. I've had various jobs within BA, both at LGW and LHR over the years since 87/88, however my present job brought me back to LGW 18 months ago and I am currently in InFlight Service as a Cabin Crew Duty Operations Manager. Thankfully I have managed to dodge the bullet quit a few times over the years and as of the 6th May 2009, I have held on for 35 Years. I hope I can keep going till I retire. My years at Edinburgh are very special to me and I have not forgotten the people in the photographs and the times spent there, mostly at Turnhouse as I only spent about a year at the new and current airport. I occasionally speak to Jack Williams and up to the beginning of this year renewed contact with Peter Steel (both retired now) and Ray Hunt, however I lost touch with the rest of the team i.e. the girls and the Engineers. Although I have now spent more time with BA, my years in BCAL will always be the most special.

Great idea. This is a smooth and professional tribute. Reflections and memories do us good, even when everyone has moved on to new horizons. The trick is to embrace the present as we enjoy our past. Always a pleasure to meet former colleagues wherever, whenever. My reflections include Caledonian JFK 69-71, (w/ Alan Stronach, Ron Watson, Andy Geary-Stevens, Mike Kidd, Tom Houston and Tim Gibson), travelling 71-73, Laker LGW 73-77, Laker JFK 77-78, SABENA ATL 78-80, BCAL ATL 80-87 (w/ Brian Robbins and Nancy Mortensen), BA ATL 87-96, BA CLT 96-to-date. Found this site through Tim Gibson, long-time buddy at British Eagle LHR 65-67, then Cal at JFK together. Sir Adam is gone. The airline he founded is gone. Neither is forgotten ... The people he inspired have gone on to wider worlds ...

2008 ... 42 years from when I first joined Caledonian Airways. Six Britannias and a DC7C (G-AOIE, why do I remember?) back then. Caledonian and then BCal was the most enjoyable time of my airline career. And I'm still in touch with so many BCal people. It is great to know that the spirit of the airline lives on. My next best experience was working for Virgin Atlantic in the late 80s and early 90s (two 747s and two Viscounts when I joined). Since then I've spent time with Virgin Express, British Midland (bmi), Qatar Airways, Gulf Air, and since Sep 2008, Etihad Airways where I have a nomadic role starting new stations for this fast expanding airline.
Now based in New York with Etihad. If anyone is passing through the Big Apple would love to buy you a beer email
Colin Alexander
I just found out about this site. I worked with Caledonian Airways in PWK and then moved to LGW with Caledonian/BUA and then BCAL. Moved to USA in 85 and am still there now with BA. Best wishes to all ex Cale folks
Lawrence (Loz) Allan
Married to Linda Allan nee Albone. Currently flying with easyJet on the B737 out of LGW. Enjoyed my time with BCAL immensely having flown the 1-11 and the DC10. Finished up before the merger as the Project and Development pilot on the 1-11 and as an IRE/TRE. To be frank no other airline I have worked for compares with BCAL in every sense - perhaps one shouldn't keep making comparisons. Nevertheless both Linda and I have some fond memories and that's worth a lot.
Julie Alldridge
I worked for BCAL (the best airline in the world) from 1981 until the end. A very sad time and still is when I think about the great times we had on route fams and in all the departments that I worked. I now work at the GAT at Gatwick and keep in touch with a few old faces but would love to hear from anyone who remembers me! A fantastic site - keep it going!
Una Allman (nee Tooth)
1964/1966 Joined BUA as an Air Hostess as we were called in those days.. Flew Herald, Viscount, Britannia, DC6, VC10 BAC 1-11.
1979/80 as Golden Oldie for British Caledonian, 1981 Children's Escort (Auntie), 1990 Crew Control Gatwick then Crew Control LHR retired in 1999. I always loved flying and obtained my PPL in 1974 and still fly my Piper L4 Cub today. Not bad for an oldie ! BUA/BCAL best days of my life.
Keith Ambridge
I have spent the happiest 10 years of my working life working for BCAL, between 1978 and 1988 in Engineering. I was lucky enough to meet Sir Adam at his home briefly before his illness took hold, then later I met his wife and two sons in a restaurant in Sussex the week Sir Adam passed away, a sad time for them and a cherished time for me, anything to do with BCAL brings back many fond memories, that I will never forget. I now work for the so called 'Worlds favourite Airline' but really I once worked for a real airline. It would be nice to hear from anyone who knew me. BCAL will always be apart of our lives and in our hearts, Bless you all

Jack Anderson
I was the asst. manager of the West Coast operation of Caledonian with Roger Woods. I worked the same job through the Caledonian-BUA change over and into the British Caledonian cycle. With the beginning of scheduled service to L.A. I took the job of airport supervisor. Stayed there until the company was forced to close. I still keep in touch with a couple of old friends in the U.K. I would like to hear from anyone out there who remembers the good old wild days. It's a wonder I'm not pickled. Don't drink anymore, had more than my share. Left the Airlines and obtained a masters degree in education. Still teaching and really love it. I now live in Las Vegas and have a room for any ex-BCAL who wish to visit. Look forward to hearing from old friends and colleagues.
Shelagh Anderson (Now Bristow)
My name is Shelagh Anderson I joined BCAL as aircrew in March 1972 and left for a career in ATC in 1981. I flew on B707,VC10 and BAC 1-11 and DC10 on all BCAL routes. I wore the McCrae and Graham of Monteith tartans. I am divorced with two teenage children and live in Virginia Water and work at the new ATC Centre at Swanwick as an Area Flight Information Services Officer. Would love to hear from anyone who remembers me and I will be at the BUA reunion on May 16th in Crawley where I hope to see ex-BCAL folk !
Susanne Anhaeuser
Been with BCAL 1984-1988 ! The best airline I ever worked for, travelled on! Please give us more pictures - especially of our uniforms! BCAL Greatest Airline ever !Would love to hear from anybody who worked at FRA until 1988 ....
Priscilla Ann Davies
I'm one of the B Cal girls, who would like to regain contact with the old crowd, I started with Iran Air, then B Cal, and after the take over by B.A. for a few more years, with B.A. We are living in N W France now, so if anybody who knew Priscilla from way back, and would like to remake contact with her, she would welcome them. The fabulous, Susan Dempsey, Nancy Jones, the lovely Tim Williamson, Tom Mormon, Karen Sherwin, Helen whiting, and others, what happened to them, and where are they now?
Jonathan (Jon) Anquetil
Flew with BUA on Dart Heralds and then various Airlines until rejoining BCAL on 111s and was "retired" in 83 when I was FO on 707s Was very sad to leave a Great Airline and great friends, but at least I missed its destruction by BA. Would love to hear from anyone who remembers me and the last days of the 707 Also if anyone knows what happened to Lin Poole or where she is now? Please contact me anytime
Laurie Aplin
As far as my career with CA/BCAL is concerned. I started in Feb.64 in Imperial Buildings, Horley (when we had one DC7C) as Capt Pat Holt's secretary. I hated every minute as my first task was to take Hadj Meeting minutes. I had no idea of the names of the people attending and what was zum zum water and who or what was Alhaji Baba Danbappa??? I left in March '79 (15 years later so it can't all have been bad!). During those years I worked in Planning (anyone remember my beautiful transatlantic programmes?), was secretary to Frank Hope for a while and ended up as secretary to Ron Lewis (Company Secretary). Many, many happy memories of places, people and tasks.
Pete Aplin and I married in 1979 and our first son was born that year. Pete passed away in 2006 after five years of ill health. He worked for CA/BCAL/BA from 1965 til a little after the BA takeover and only retired as Chief Engineer of DAS Air in early 2006.
Richard Appelbaum
I organized many charter flights from US colleges and universities in the period 1959 - 1965, using Caledonian turbo prop aircraft. I worked closely with John Sikes and Alan Stronach in the NY offices of the airline. I would like to obtain a photo or postcard of a Caledonian aircraft for my visual autobiography. Best wishes, Richard.
Chris & Linda Arnold (nee Marshall)
I joined BCAL Ticket Desk LGW from BA in 1977. A great couple of years, with fond memories of the rabbit hutch desk and split screen computers. Now in business travel. Linda joined cabin crew in 1982 and is still flying (in her maiden name) as purser for BA on 747/777 ex LHR. Wherever we go she meets ex BCAL crew still working. Would love to hear from anyone that remembers us. Great site.
Alan Ash
Started with BCAL in Houston Res in March '85. Went into training for a bit and ended up at IAH in '87. Sad to hear about Sir Adam, also "Rocky" who was BMOC in my time in Houston Res.10700 North Freeway will no longer be. The end of April closes the book on that part of our lives, when the Res office closes for the last time. The people who have left the building already, had a hard time walking out, knowing they will not be going back. I am still at IAH with B.A. and would like to hear from anyone who remembers "those good old days".
Alan Ashton
I worked for BCAL for 14 years as a cleaner. I have never quite been the same since it went !!!!!!
Barry Ashton
Great to find a site on BCAL, what memories. My history started with Silver City then BUA (CLAT),BCAL finally BA. Now have my own business in the Cotswolds. Remember the VC10? They are still flying around here, based at RAF Brize Norton
Ray Astridge
Joined BUA at Gatwick in 1969 as an apprentice, survived numerous redundancy and takeover threats. Still on the airport with the world's favourite airline, looking after Airbuses'!. Recognised a few of the names in the guestbook. Are there any ex-apprentices out there who can remember the Crawley ITC and that Anson??. Lost track with all but a few of my year, does any one have any news of apprentices from "G" entry??
Douglas Atkins
It is with sadness we learn that Captain Douglas Atkins passed away on Sept 8th 2008, our sympathies to his family and friends. Thank you to Ian Macbeth for his message.

Transair, BUA, BCAL, BA. 1956 to 1988. DC3, Viscount, Britannia, VC10, BAC 1-11
So many memories of wonderful days with great people. Times that can never be repeated in today's modern world. I would like to think there are still many of these old friends around who also remember me. Signing guest book for second time. Capt. BAC 1-11 from 1971 to 1988. Previously First Officer on VC10, Britannia, Viscount and DC-3. Joined Transair, Croydon, 05th. November 1956 becoming BUA, BCAL and finally BA shortly before retirement. I miss the many friends I made, in all departments, over the years and would love to hear from any or all of them.
Vic Attwood
I joined Hunting Clan in 1958 in cargo having already been at Heathrow with various cargo agents since 1953. Became Cargo Supervisor on formation of BUA and finally Cargo Superintendent. Moved to Gatwick in December 1970 on formation of B.Cal and finished up with the title Manager Cargo Operations and Technical Services. Declined offer from BA to return to Heathrow in 1988 and frelanced as an advisor to BA, BAA, Manchester Airport and others. Retired to Inverness in 2005 but still activly involved in aviation as a commttee member of the Highland Branch of the Royal Aeronautical Soc. My wife - Audrey worked for Blue Sky Holidays (remember them !) Would be please to see anyone up here in the highlands on holiday
Angela Austin (now Waller) 11/05/09
I was never actually a crew member if British Caledonian, though I was with the parent airlines of BCal for some years. I joined Hunting-Clan on 20th May 1957, and left (by which time it had become British United Airways) on 29th June 1962. I had a wonderful time for all those years. Since then I've lived and worked around the world -- Libya (I met and married my American husband while working in Libya in 1966 and we often flew BCal in and out of Libya for some years), California, Texas, Canada I always try to get to the British United biennial reunion. I've just fulfilled a near lifelong ambition -- my first novel has been published! It was launched on 7th February 2009, called "The Snows of Yorkshire" and its doing well.
My next book is non-fiction and is called "Before There Were Trolley Dollies" and it was published on 3rd July 2009 and the 'info' on the back reads as follows: "Angela Waller, who was an air hostess in the 1950s and 1960s, when it was considered a glamorous and highly sought after job, tells everything you ever wanted to know about what went on in that golden age of passenger flying. In this fascinating book, she shares her experiences and tells stories from the hilarious to the harrowing, the factual to the funny, about the famous and the gossip. And she tells how very different things were, back in those says before there were trolley dollies...."
Please see my website: www.angelawaller.co.uk I'd be happy for anyone I knew when I was flying to get in touch with me through here or through my website.
John Bailey
I joined BUA in 1968 working as a flight dispatcher within flight operations at Gatwick. After the creation of Caledonian-BUA and then BCAL, I transferred to the Sales Division in 1972 where I worked within the charter department, initially dealing with short haul and ad hoc, progressing on to long haul routes. What a time that period was, I still remember trying to find right up to the last minute other carriers who we could sub charter overbooked flights to. I left BCAL in 1977 to start my own travel company and consider my time at BCAL as the most enjoyable of my career and still consider BCAL as the best airline that has ever flown. Having recognised so many names on this site I would love to hear from anyone who remembers me or knew me over this period.
Phil Baker
I joined BUA straight from school in 1966 (just after the world cup win) originally in Load Control. Spent 22 happy years in Traffic, Pax Services and Overseas until the BA takeover. Initially went to Manchester, where eventually moved to the dark side with the Airport authority, now run my own operation many miles away in Adelaide Airport, South Australia, where I have been for last eleven years and intend to retire here. Would be delighted to catch up with any of the hundreds of great BCAL friends and colleagues any time you may find yourself in this part of the world.
My wife Sarah (nee Whitmore) and our three children are here with me………she worked on Check-in and Coupon Control at LGW in the mid to late 70's, before moving up to Admin, where she became Senior Rostering Officer (Pax Services) until she left the Company to join me on a posting in Accra in 1982. She didn't return to work when we came back late in 1984, as we had started our family by then.
By the way, my old man (Harry Baker) also worked with the Company for many years, starting out as a Porter (behind the checkin desks) and working his way up to Baggage Services Supervisor. For a while, I was his direct Supervisor and later on his departmental Manager (ditto with my wife), which made for some interesting discussions at home on occasions. He passed on almost a decade ago now.
Alexandra Ballesteros
Looking to this website, memories which were lined up in a drawer, appeared strongly (with collateral effects of course!!!). I flew from 1979 to 1982 with base in Buenos Aires. Times were difficult in Argentina and this job was a gift of life. Unfortunately I don't remember full names (except Mike Ward) but I do remember your faces. If somebody remembers me, please send me an email. I live in France and it would be easy for me to join you at an annual reunion. I’m in touch with an Argentinean girl: Marina. I suppose the other girls have changed their names while they got married. Bons baisers, A.
Jerry Ball
Good website. I worked for B. Cal. from 1981 to 1986. I used to deliver the post to Sir Adam, and so I was sorry to hear of his death this week. My father Vic also used to work for B. Cal. flight engineering on VC10's, 707's, and DC10's. I am seeking to return to the Airline industry after a spell with British Airways earlier this year.
George Banks
I joined BCAL in April 1973 in catering initially as a catering administrator for the flight kitchen, working for Mrs Katie Wilde before becoming Catering Representative Europe/Africa/South America/USA/Far East over the years and was made overseas catering manager by Charles Powell in the early eighties and subsequently Manager menu planning and product design system wide by Bob Coleman who was head of in flight service at the time. I started the small Lagos Catering unit in 1974, covered the Houston Inaugural and catering in 1977 [operated by Romeo Sierra my favourite 707 ……I felt sorry for it as it operated every Houston flight for virtually the 1st week of operations!!]
I worked with some wonderful people Mrs Wilde, Pam Ryan, Mary Burgess, Betty Shelton, Alison Steer, Michel Noel,Graham Elliott and so many people on the BCAL network…..Catering in Africa was always a challenge especially the `1-11 in 8/80 cofig to CMN/LPA/BJL/FRE and the 707 to CMN/BJL/FRE/ROB and back via FRE/DKR to LGW to name just a couple of services [hope ive got my 3 letter IATA codes correct]…I covered many of the BCAL Royal flights and created some catering concepts for BCAL which everyone seemed to like, La Cuisine du Ciel and La Brasserie which won catering awards. I stayed with British Airways after the merger/takeover and joined them based at Londons Heathrow airport in April 1988. It was thanks to BCAL that BA wanted me as we beat them two years running in the annual ITCA catering conference Mercury awards in 1985 and 1986, and at my interview with BA for a job the Head of BA catering said to me “We really liked your La Cuisine du Ciel“ Concept! And we would like to offer you the job of Manager Menu standards.
I stayed with BA until October 2006 when I took Early retirement and joined Emirates Airlines on 4th Jan 2007 based Dubai as Food Product Manager and I am enjoying it very much.I keep in touch with many of my BCAL colleagues from catering/crew /marketing etc and I feel these for me were great times. As maybe you know I published a book GOURMET AND GLAMOUR IN THE SKY…..A life in airline catering and there is some fabulous pictures and memories of BCAL going back to the DC7C of Caledonian . Click here if you wish to order a copy although only a few are left.

Thanks Dave for creating a great site dedicated to a great Airline with great people. I joined Caledonian Airways (Prestwick) Ltd back in Sept 1966 and stayed with the Co in various guises until It's demise in 1988. During that time I saw the world and lots of other things as well!! at crew parties and on the "Hadj" Certainly the best years of my life so far!! I see some of the "Oldies" names coming out of the woodwork at last, which reminds me to pass on my regards to Dad (Ron) when you next see him. Keep up the good work. Regards Ian

What was it about BCal ?! A gentle airline for a gentle era! Seems like this old world turned a little slower back
then....! After 7 great years with Singapore Airlines London, I was a relative late comer to BCal, joining Ground Services Training LGW in 1985 until we were merged into BA in 1988. Even so, I have the fondest and warmest memories of working and 'behaving badly' with you special people from across the BCal network! Some magical times amongst you all at LGW, CDG, GVA, TUN, LOS, FIH, IAH, DFW and JFK. Still see many of you flying now as an LHR-BA based, part time Purser - but never enough! Living in Mallorca and happiest sailing, windsurfing, drinking and listening to live music with friends like you! Life's too short.....................! Thank you' Sir Adam. Let's Go .....British Caledonian!!!
Nick Barlow
On leaving BA and joining SITA in 1983, I became responsible for implementing the then new SITA Cargo system for BCAL around their network. I became very attached to the airline and people. I moved to HKG in 1985, and then became a regular ID passenger on the old BR381/382 - up until the takeover. SITA became a sanctuary for several ex BCAL people, and three of my old contacts work with me today.
Jan Barnes (now Clark)
how lovely to find this site, so many memories flooding back of happy times. I was cabin crew out of LGW until the summer of 1988, so ended up as a BA trolley dolly; however, BCal was the best! I wish I had a better memory as I remember some names but not faces ... old age creeping up !
Paul Barnes "Barney"
I joined CALEDONIAN/BUA Cargo on the 5/4/1971, the letter heading was still B U A. I had worked in the cargo industry, with the Monotype Corporation, Ingersol Rand London & then with Turners Air Agency based at the old 'Bee Hive' Gatwick. (The old race course). A advert came out for a Import clerk with Caledonian / B U A, I applied and got the job and was taken on. John Creton was there the day I walked through the door. Coming from the freight Agency business no one spoke to the new guys unless they had to about work, it was like being an apprentice. ( five to six months) once in it was a fantastic experience, the people were great and very professional. I have never looked back, all the BCAL years were fantastic, ONE big family wherever you worked, never a 'team'. My friends Harry Davis his son Greg, Peter Casey, Captain Jack Sherval, Graham Neath, Steve Taylor and many others were very fortunate to work on the Golden Lion Children's Trust which helped many children have a 'GOOD DAY' out. I will stop now, I was working at B A World Cargo LGW inventory Control, along with many other old BCAL cargo guys and girls, but I have now retired after 39 years with BUA, BCAL and BA.
Bill Barnett
1978 to the end. Passenger Services through out. Remember many names from the best company ever to fly the sky. Still have many items from thse past day. Sadly left the airport environment in '06, now run my own gardening business in Crawley. Honoured and proud
Lesley Barrett
Having worked for BCAL from start to finish I find this web very interesting. Thank you
Mike Barrett
It is with sadness that we learn that Mike passed away on November 28th 2008, our condolences to Mike's family and friends. Mike started at BUA in 1961 in Load Control LGW, then went Loadmastering on DC-6's on the BUA Africargo service from LHR, then to 707's for B-Cal, also going to IAH as Cargo Svcs Mngr, leaving the Golden Lion in 1982.
A memorial service for Mike was held on April 17th 2009 in his home town of Horsted Keynes, East Sussex.
Mike's original Crew Room entry from 1996
At last a BCAL web-site. Have just organised and held the third tri-annual BUA Traffic Reunion. Would be happy to arrange a get together - please let me have your views. Good to see so many 'old names'.
Peter Barrie
Joined Transair in 1960 and progressed through BUA/BCal . Various positions from Load control, Mgr Ramp Ops then Mgr Cargo Worldwide and finally VP Freight the Americas based in Houston. Decided not to join BA instead became GM of a golf and country club in Spring Texas (thought I had died and gone to heaven). Drawn back into aviation by Qantas as VP Freight Asia based in Singapore. Retired in 2000 after 11 years in Singapore and 40 years in the airline business. Had a wonderful career and met many fine people. However the fondest memories are of the BCal days. Your guestbook is indicative of the dedication, spirit and joy of all involved in making BCal a great airline. I now live in Mandurah, Western Australia (great place) not exactly the end of the world but you can see it from here !!
Peter Barry
I started with BCAL in March 73 in Pax Services as a PSA at LGW. Worked on the ticket desk, baggage services, load control, red –cap and then Pax Services Supervisor for about 3 years. Worked hard and played hard before moving across to Sales where David Coltman and David Joy agreed to put me on the first overseas manager’s pool – along with Robbie Baird and others.
Spent a few years overseas in DLA and then came back to work for Graham Atkinson in Eastern Routes at Caledonian House where I had a great time working with some more fantastic people. Stayed on with BA as one of the liabilities they bought in the ‘merger’ and was sent to Gaborone to replace, of all people, the man who gave me my chance – David Joy!! Stayed with BA and did lots of jobs – MAD, AKL, SAO, MIA and then in Miami I was lucky enough to finally get agreement to get the package and left BA end of March 2001 – 5 weeks later was in LOS setting up Virgin Atlantic! 4 years in Nigeria and then spent just under 3 years with them in Jo’burg as their GM for Southern Africa . Did not want to return to the UK – yes it was going to be Crawley again – so jumped ship and joined Menzies and their VP Service Delivery.
Loved BCAL and all that we stood for and the people – haven’t managed to get to any reunions but have been in touch with lots of friends over the years – drop me a line if you have a mind to.
Sally Bartle (nee Henley)
I was with BCAL from 1970 to 1979, first in R&D and then Flight Ops. Good to see some familiar names, e.g. Laurie Price and Linda Isted. Would love to make contact with some old friends and colleagues. Does anybody know where Shirley Dyer and Christine Brookes are? I know Christine moved to Leeds but originally came from Redhill.
Audrey Bateman
I joined BCAL in 1972 and was there for 10 years, mainly in Advertising and Promotions. I still keep in touch with a number of people and helped Deirdre Drewett arrange the recent reunion at the Wingspan (5.9.08). It's amazing how the grapevine works and about 40 people turned up, despite the terrible weather. It was a great evening and lovely to see everyone again, the general consensus was that we should do it more often. If anyone is interested in being included please let me have your email address and we will keep you posted or watch this site for news.
Tony Bearman BCAL from 1976-1988 then BA at LHR Great memories!!
Fiona Beatt (nee Tester)
Hi to everyone - I joined BUA in 1970 and then wore the 'Hunting McRae' for Caledonian Airways as an air hostess, leaving in 1975 after marrying and becoming pregnant very soon afterwards. I agree with everyone and look back on those times with fond and exciting memories, fantastic times in Rio (loved the made to measure bikinis) and attempting to ski in Chile (hopeless at that). Wonderful times at the Norfolk Hotel in Nairobi, and horrible times at the Airport Hotel (so called) in Freetown! I am so grateful for the opportunities I had to travel and work with some wonderful people at BCAL. Does anyone out there know the whereabouts of Marylyn Tennent and Gill Beaumont? I have tried to find them, no joy so far. Love the site, thank you so much, hope to be at the reunion in November.
Brian J Beesley
I joined BCAL from Swissair in 1984 as Senior Sales Executive and Assistant Airport Manager in Riyadh, KSA. then in sales/marketing at Gatwick in British Caledonian Aviation Associates (GSAs). In 1986 I trained as a management consultant and became an Independent Aviation Consultant specializing in airline start up and expansion projects.
Phil Benson
Joined British Caledonian as a BAC 1-11 pilot in April 76. DC10 from 79-89. Then 11 years on Concorde, now on 777. Although I was trained as an airline pilot at Hamble by British Airways in 1974-5, on graduating there was no job available with BA (we would have had to wait 9 years for a flying job!). I consider myself to be VERY lucky to have managed to get a job with BCal. I, and my contemporary 'baby pilots' had a fantastic time flying around the world with such a great, friendly bunch of people. A thoroughly enjoyable time. And we got paid for it too! It was such fun sharing the house with many pilot and cabin staff friends. I remember all the great airline parties we had. I'm still living in the Guildford area. I go to as many of the annual Flight Deck Mutual Fund reunions as I can, and still regularly keep in touch with many of my ex-BCal friends.
Andy Bentley
Started off in Engineering and ended up in Cargo where I met the other half Kim (Mason) who was in Blue Sky Holidays before moving to Cargo. It sound corny but it was the people that made the difference - how I notice the difference today. Congratulations on a great site.
Laurie Berryman
I joined BCAL in 1977 as a Fares and ticketing Instructor. Moved overseas in 1982 to Geneva and then Riyadh and Jeddah where the dreaded BA took over. Stayed with BA until 1990 and then joined Emirates which is home for many ex BCAL people. I would be happy to hear from any of my old colleagues.

Brings back the memories / Job well done
Mary Biggs (now Banks)
Just had David Williams and Dave Erich over for dinner and heard about this web site! I'd love to hear from some old friends!
Peter Black
Greetings to all old friends in the LGW-based 78-88 Advg & Sales Promo party team. Still hoping to hear back from that computer literate "The Lunch", Norma his secretary, Sally, Cynthia, Patricia, Audrey, Arthur Jamieson, Mike Booth and maybe even twerps like that off-line ( DFW ) sales legend Mark Culmer - although he's probably still lost on the Tulsa loop! Greetings also to the much heftier partiers in the Houston corp office - Mary the Biggs, Dave W and Dave R and many more. A salute to Sir Adam - who made all these great memories and friendships possible. I was very sad to have missed the Sept opportunity to pay tribute to Sir Adam and the chance to meet with old marketing friends. From Nic "The Lunchtime" Boise to Jeff Youtan to Arthur Jameson & Alan Painter to Bob Isted and Mike Booth - most of the old Wingspan drinking group.
Monica Blacklaw (now Stronach) 14/08/08
I was a member of the ground staff @ Edinburgh Airport for 10 years from 1970 to 1980 and remember my time there with great fondness. I was lucky enough to finish the last shift at the old Edinburgh Airport and then next morning start the first shift at the new Edinburgh Airport. I worked with some of the nicest people and thoroughly enjoyed my time with the airline.
Sally Blake (nee Fuller) 13/08/08
I was a Reservations Supervisor in the terrapins at Gatwick. I joined BUA in revenue accounts and then transferred to reservations and became supervisor at the amalgamation of BUA and Caledonian. Working for BCAL was the best job I ever had. The Golden Lion Trust is very dear to my heart and when I was elected Mayor of Crawley in 2006 I took it as my Charity. We raised enough money to re-enact GLCTs very first trip, by taking a group of 100 Special Needs children to Jersey for the day. It was magical. Everyone was so helpful…and the children had a ball….(so did the helpers). I would urge anyone with a little free time to help GLCT where they can… The Trust really does make dreams come true.
Debee Dellinger (now Boerner) 17/03/09
I worked in Houston, Texas, from 1985 - 1987 until I got married and I moved back to Indiana. Those were some of the best years of my life, anyone from BCAL who wants to share memories, not just Houston, drop me a line.
Don Bond
It is with sadness that we learn that Don passed away at the end of April 2008. Our sympathies go to his family and friends.
Don's original entry read:
Good old Fred's Air Charter, BUA., BCAL. I was the VC10 Fleet Navigator with BCAL until I.N.S. took over. What a fantastic aeroplane that was. The 707 was fine, but -------. Best wishes to any of my old mates from those very happy days. Don's family can be contacted via his nephew Julian, jxb@glaisyers.com
David Bonfield
It is nice to see the old blue and yellow again. It was a great company to work for and I still miss it! I was there February 1973- until taken over by BA
Dick Bonner
I joined BUA at Gatwick in 1964 and sadly left BCAL in 1988, lots of wonderful memories. An excellent site. Would love to hear from folk who want to wallow in nostalgia!
Cecilia Marie Bonnet
I was visiting the BCAL website and tears came out from me. My uncle was Patrick Ryan who was the Airport Manager for BUA and then for BCAL up to 1982. I was 11 years old at that moment and I used to go with him on sundays to the airport and stay the hole day watching the flight operations of the day, and since then I promised to him when I will be an adult I will be prepare to be the best Flight Attendant. I still keep in the closet at my mother's home, uniforms and BCAL amenities of that time and they are my treasures. Now i'm 38 years old and i'm an American Airlines flight attendant for 9 years and I am based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, my country. I still remember my first trip on an airplane, the DC10 BCAL flight from Buenos Aires to Rio de Janeiro BR in 1979.
Gayl Boon (nee Symons)
I was with Caledonian from 1970-1972 as a hostess. From there I went off into the sunset with a F/O who flew for Singapore Airlines and then onto Gulf Air (alone!!). I now live in Durban. South Africa, and I would love to hear from any crew from those wonderful times. It really was an incredible airline and I am very sad that she is no longer in the skies. I shared a house in Ifield with 4 other girls one of whom was a Hillary Buckley. (I cannot remember the others), I would love to get in contact with a Ms Robin Swanney (that was her maiden name) as she was responsible for getting me involved in the airline business. She joined in 1969 . If anyone can help I would be most grateful.
Mike Booth
Both myself and my wife worked for BCAL for some 14 years and would like to make contact again with lost, but not forgotten, friends and ex colleagues. My wife's maiden name, I am sure some of you will remember her, - Maureen Hancock. She left BCAL in 86 when our daughter was born. Anyone who wants to contact her can do so via my email address. By the way, I didn't mention yesterday what a great website and it is really good to be able to contact old friends and colleagues. They were, after all, the best days of our lives!
Roger Botting
Started with BUA in Oct 69, went on to export cargo in 71, became a loadmaster in 74 and spent until April 80 as a loadmaster on the B707F's. Moved to open the cargo operation in Atlanta in April 80, moved to Houston in 81 and left BCAL at the end of 81 to come back to Atlanta. Started my own company in 82, still moving freight, anybody from the old days in cargo or flight crews who remember the freighter days just drop me an email. Have flown BA many times in and out of ATL first class but just never seemed as good as the golden lion, meet many people today all over the world that still remember the ladies in the tartan uniforms and the good food and wine. My father was Harold Botting in engine bay at Gatwick who retired in the late 70's.
Trevor Boud 02/08/09
Joined Caledonian in April ’65 and in those early years knew nearly everybody, but regrettably had less interface with crews, ground-staff and admin personnel as we got bigger and enlarged the group. Was a Director of the airline from ’67 and had other Group positions too. Was very disappointed that the Civil Aviation Review recommendations in the mid ’80s were thwarted by Maggie alone, and that as a consequence BCAL’s future was going to be severely restricted, leading to a take-over by BA. I am proud to have worked with the entire staff and of what was achieved in those demanding regulated years, when constraints restricted our expansion and choice of routes. Subsequently conducted various aviation consultancies until 9/11 when my then services abruptly ceased. Resorted to performing a couple of property developments, but now consider myself retired.
In ’85 married Bobby Flood ex BUA cabin staff and at the time in the BCAL London Sales team. We live in Cranleigh. I am pleased to see many names on this site which I do know and remember from those good old days, and will be pleased to receive emails from any friends and colleagues who have the time to reminisce or to down the odd glass together.
James J Boyle

Guy Boyling
Joined in 1971 after 5 years with BEA (on Comet 4B, Trident, Viscount, Vanguard, 1-11 500 etc.) as Cabin Crew, straight on to a B 707 as a “Chief”, initially shadowing Joe Connery (where are you Joe ?). Five great years followed, then moved to Sales and Marketing for another eight “eventful” years. working with the most amazing airline people in the business. After BCAL, I stayed in Sales and Travel for a further eleven years (Thomas Cook Business Travel),and listened to many agents and “corporate” still talking about the great airline it was. Wouldn’t have missed it for the world. I look forward to future re-unions and the chance to yak about the great adventure
Jette Boyson
I am one of the old BCAL girls. flying from 1982-1986. I was probably one of the only Danish stewardesses in BCAL and feel very blessed that I had the opportunity to join the worlds best airline where I had such a good time. Today I have my own business are married and have a lovely daughter who is working for SAS (Scandinavian Airlines). I am living in Denmark but I am often in the UK (London) and would love to hear from anyone who remembers me
Phil Bowell
Hi Dave - the website is really developing well - looking good and I really like the personal picture segment - next time I am back in UK, I will sort some out and send them in. Now in Bahrain with BAS where Neil & Sandy Warringer used to be. Now have Kevin Goody here with me and having a good time. Pauline (nee Scott - Redcap) and I just back from Thailand where we met up with Trevor Warburton and Frank Skillbeck. Both looking extremely well. About time we started to think of a "total" reunion, instead of fragmented groups - would be great if all were interested in such a venture. Would be well worth the effort to arrange. I am very clear I have had a wonderful career because I have BCAL on my resume - am sure the vast majority of us feel the same. Would love to hear from anyone who remembers me.
As an aside, Pauline and I visited Chris and Lori Hill at their home in France last year (La Varache). Can thoroughly recommend it - you will get a very warm welcome.
Dave Bowers
Remember BCAL service initiation into STL, and Mr. MAC (Mr. J.S. McDonnell) having a ceremony with a company DC-10. He was one proud fellow!
Marcia Bradley
So, when is someone going to start BCAL up again? I'd be glad to help!
Peter Braham
I started with BUA in 1966 in Telecoms section and carried on through to 86 with Bcal. Had a great time and worked with many great people both at LGW and around the world. Would be nice to hear from anyone who remembers me.
Jackie Brand
Hello to the BCAL folk of long ago, it's nice to get the chance to remember a great company
Trish Breach (nee Williams)
I worked for BCAL for nearly nine years. I took voluntary redundancy in 1986, where I used to work as a Ticket Desk Supervisor. I LOVED IT THERE!
Maureen Breckell (now Kercher)
One of the original Caledonian airways employees, maiden name was BRECKELL
Sue Breeze (ex Luckett and Beauchamp)
With BCAL - 1969 to 1983 - Heathrow Cargo. Worked with Pat Evans and a good crew. Good to hear from anyone from the cargo shed. Saw Monica Sait onboard. She was with LHR Interline at the time. Have not been thru all pages yet but hope to. Get in touch anyone who knows or remembers me.
Heather Brenzel
I started working for Caledonian Airways in 1968 as a flight attendant - moved to New York when we became British Caledonian Airways and started schedule service out of JFK. I worked at the airport and then the New York Sales office through two schedule service attempts and a successful charter program and finally left just before the dreaded BA takeover. Adam Thomson visited New York frequently and as we were a small office we got to know him very well. He was a gentleman in the true sense of the word and B.CAL was a wonderful company to work for. Thank you for creating this website for all of us ex-Cally people to remember what a class act we use to be!
Bob Brett
I would just like to tell you how proud I was of BCAL. I worked in Cargo at LHR from 1972-1986. It was the best working years of my life, the whole company was as a whole one big family, which I miss still to this day. Best Regards to all that have known me.
Candy Bridge
Hi everyone, I've been meaning to add my name to this wonderful BCAL Tribute site for ages and finally I've got round to it. I joined the best airline in the world in 1978 as Secretary to Alan Bartlett in the Telecommunications department where I also did work for Terry Storer and Lou Parisi. I was there for a good few years before moving over to Personnel where I worked with Dot Davidson and Alan Mitchell, who was a great boss. Alongside Alan, Frank Skilbeck and others I was part of the Committee that worked on getting the new Wingspan open at Cally House and will never forget the opening with Les Dawson. After leaving in 1986 I travelled overseas and worked as a Tour Manager for a local company in Montego Bay, Jamaica and then moved to Fort Lauderdale in the US where I ran my own travel agency for 5 years. I returned to the UK in 1998 and couldn't get back into the travel industry. I worked as PA to the CEO of Courts (furniture group) from which I was also made redundant, and then undertook a series of temp jobs. Early in 2007 my luck changed and I was accepted by British Airways to work as CSA at LGW and I'm still there. Would love to hear from any of my old colleagues and hope to see you all one day soon at a reunion do.
Richard Bristow
I was with BCAL for ten years from 1976. Mainly working in overseas sales divisions. During the last four years I was in UK sales running the technology team. Happy days! Hi to everyone who knows me, I hope the world is treating to well!! I am still in touch with many friends from BCAL so let me know if you looking for anyone from sales or res services

Cabin crew from 1971-1976. I have some very happy memories. Those were the days. I am very proud to have worked for British Caledonian. I would love to hear from anyone I flew with.
David Brooksbank
We have learned that David recently passed away in hospital in Norwich in early April 2010. He succumbed to the emphysema that he suffered from for three years. He was in his sixty-ninth year and our sympathies go to his family and friends. Details of David's memorial service
Russell Brown
It is with sadness that we learn that Russ passed away on 30th August 2009. Our sympathies go to his family and friends.
Russell worked for BCal as Engineering Manager.
Sheila Brown (now Nutt)
1976 - 1982 A great airline, many fond memories of my time with BCAL!
Erika Browning
I worked in Cabin Services, original Caledonian Airways from 1969 until 1982 - a great 13 years.
Shaun Browning
Ex Transair 1960-1964 Avionics, remember DC3's Viscounts and Islanders saw in the creation of BUA with Sir Freddy. Returned as a DPE in Materials in 78 till the dreaded merger in 88. Stuck two years with the Giant then returned to LGW with the next best airline Virgin, still not a patch on BCAL and no airline will ever surpass it.
Alex Bryant (now Dumbrell) Now with VAA
Mike Bull
Aviation is in the blood. My father, Vic joined Jersey Airlines from the RAF in 1960 and went on to work with BUA and BCAL in senior management. I took up the mantle in 1982 in passenger services and continue with BA today in Aircraft Dispatch. However I feel my time in Cale was unique with a great bunch of people and a fierce loyalty to the company. Would love to hear from anyone else out there!
Sue Burns (now Wolsey)
Lovely to see many familiar names. I joined BCAL Sales/Marketing in 1976 (taken on by Denis Long and saddened to hear of his recent death, very kind man although he had a booming voice!) I remember when Denis and his wife Ann went out to Sierra Leone and I had a lovely holiday with them, along with Lyn Ewart (as was). Anyway, I worked in Sales right up until April 88 with lovely bosses such as Rohan Alce, Alan Painter and of course my old mate Barbara Pattison (have seen her around from time to time as we both live in Crawley). After BCAL I went to Dan Air where I saw a few ex-BCAL-ers, and stayed there until they were taken over by BA (was it something I said???), after that in the wilderness working for several non-aviation companies (boring!). Back in 1999 I joined the Trade Union - TGWU based at the Horley Office dealing with the Gatwick Airport union members, so often see names cropping up from way back then. I still send Christmas cards to a number of former colleagues so get to hear how others are getting on. I did enjoy my time at BCAL and now that I am about to retire early (my husband Mike retires this spring), when we hope to move down to the New Forest with all the Nags, if we get online I will certainly check the website again and download some addresses. In the meantime I will leave my work email address
David Burr
Great site.. I joined BCAL in 1979 when the DC10's were grounded. Went for my interview with Ron Gunner, very tense situation waiting for Ron to finish whatever paperwork he was doing so to break the ice, looking at the DC10's in , I think it was hangar 5, I said " I bet they're getting well serviced now". Ron sat up, glared at me and said, " They're always bloody well serviced". Well I got the job, starting in the Engine Bay. Never have I enjoyed work so much, in particular when I progressed to Duty Planning Engineer after much encouragement from dear Paul Trice who gave me the confidence to attempt such a move.. God Bless you Paul. Could go on for ages. To any old colleagues who remember me, would love to hear from you
Ann Butler (nee Westlake)
It is with sadness that we learn that Ann passed away on August 2nd 2008, our condolences to Ann's family and friends.
This message from Gilly Matthews,
Of the very many great people I met and worked with over the years, a wonderful and lifelong friend was Ann Westlake. It is with huge regret that I have to inform you that Ann died on August 2nd 2008 at the Royal United Hospital, in Bath, UK. She leaves a husband and two children. She was 53 years old…much, much too young. If you remember Ann, and what a genuinely lovely, funny person she was, please raise a glass to her memory. Thank You.
Ann's Guestbook entry
Flew as cabin crew from May 1973 until March 1984. Still miss the camaraderie and all those late night chats in the galley sitting on an upturned canister!
Riaz Butt (Ron Butt)
I worked for British Caledonian Airways engineering, Ramp and Base, from 1970 till my early retirement in 1994 from BA . Before that I worked for British Eagle till its demise in 1968. Would like to get in touch with any old mates. Best wishes to all.
Roslyn Byers (now Beeston)
Sister of Audrey Bateman, Advertising and Promotions, and sister-in-law of Ann Beeston and Sally Beeston, Hosties (BCal was a real family affair for us). I joined BCal in March 1971 and was on the first ‘Hosties’ VC10 course to go into the tartan uniform (Mackellar) - Sandra Clegg where are you??? I still have my original course photo, if anyone would like to have a look I can forward a copy. Emigrated to Australia in1986 and after working for BA in Canberra and Brisbane am now in customer service with Qantas at Brisbane International where I worked with Chris Guyler until recently. If anyone is passing through Brissy, please say Hi!
Paddy Callahan
My name is Jem Bowkett, and I'm trying to find a cousin who worked for BCAL in the '70s as a pilot. His name is Paddy Callahan (born 1940), wife Marie, daughter Lisa. I have vague information that he went to fly for another airline in the West Indies after leaving BCAL. with thanks
Bruce Campbell
Joined BCAL in 76. Since 88, I’ve been posted to Asia for 10 years. Now based in LON covering Africa, Asia and Australasia. Welcome contact from old friends with whom I’ve lost touch
Peter Candy
Was first part of the Pipe Band in 1978 and later joined the Company in 1980 until the end. Worked in Insurance and Claims Dept, firstly in "Dallas" and then in the old BA Helicopters building with Stores. Now with Virgin. Great memories.
Cheryl Carey (updated email)
I worked for BCAL from 1980 to 1985 on 7th floor of Caledonian House as a legal secretary firstly to Chris Rouse, Legal Exec, then later to Alan Jones, Solicitor. So sad to hear of Sir Adam's death. It's wonderful to see such a fabulous tribute to what was the best airline of the last century. Still miss everyone who worked there. Would love to hear from any of you.
Jean Carlyle Lyon (nee Baxter, Wollen)
What wonderful memories you have given me. I am an ex-BUA and British Caledonian Stewardess, started in 1970 and left in 1986. I flew on all the 1-11's, VC10s, 707s, DC10s and 747s. It was a great company to work for, people mattered and it could and still would knock BA into a cocked hat. We were known as the friendly airline and it was true. I would love to hear from any other crew members, and I send regards from Trish Stafford who also flew on all the above and worked earlier for Morton Air Services. I left in 1986 and am now working at the Salcombe Harbour Office in Devon.
Sue Carne
Hi. I worked as cabin crew from 78 to 86. Fantastic to stumble across this web site. May even dig out some old pictures if I can find anything interesting. Would love to hear from anyone who remembers me. Those were the days!
Peter Casey
Started with BUA 14th April 1969 as a temp loader, moved to PAX services in 1970 where i met my future wife. Bernice (Robinson), we are still together with 2 grown up kids that have flown the nest. Moved to Cargo in 1976, still there with the likes of Paul Barnes, Brian Bonsells, John Smith and others, all old BCal. Great memories of my BUA and BCal days, and will not be forgotten (proper airlines). I retired on 1st June 2009 after 40 years in the airline business. Great Site, keep it up.
Edward Cecil
A great site! BCAL were the best airline during my 34 years in the travel business. I had the cheek to ring on a Friday morning for a agents rebated ticket for a weekend in Edinburgh travelling up the same day, and they always squeezed me on somehow. The staff were great and no major airline has equalled them
Renato Cerpa
Great site. BCAL was my airline while studying in the UK. Spent hours on board BCAL's 707s flying from London to holidays in my home town, Rio de Janeiro (stop in Recife), always with excellent service. Loved BCAL and it's a pity not to be able to GO BRITISH CALEDONIAN anymore. Still, to remember is to live. Congratulations for the site and to all who made up BCAL such a special airline, thanks.
Richard (Dick) Chamberlain
I was an aircraft mechanic working in the VC-10 hanger from 1971-77. I have many fond memories of the guys I used to work with and have made contact with one of them, after 30 years, through your web site. The years I spent with BCAL were most enjoyable, and like a lot of the guys, I was glad to leave before BA took over and ruined one of the best airlines I have ever worked for.
Heather Chapman (nee Brechin)
Cabin crew 1973-78. So great to find this site, and all because of my daily rag!! Wonderful memories and some amazing people, from the Delmon in Bahrain, (crazy parties) to the Norfolk in Nairobi, to some extended stays in Lagos thanks to the military junta (twice). It really was like a large family, and would really like to get in touch with Iain Gardiner, Angie Rivett, Gill Stubbs, and Reece Ridley. Ring any bells? Will try to come to the next re-union, and would also love to hear from anyone who remembers me.
Connie Charles
Connie was a member of Crew for British Caledonian, she sadly passed away on Christmas Day in 1988. Her fiance was Peter Wieland and he was wondering if there are perhaps some friends who still remember Connie ? He would be pleased to hear from them, email Peter
Phil Christy
1976-1988,engineering, great site, good to see old colleagues and the rampant lion again
Laurence Civil
BCAL was simply the best, great training, the best product and a family that it was an honour to have been part of
Marion Clamp
My first flight ever was on BCAL. The flight to my new home in the US was on BCAL. When we moved to Houston our second day we were driving north on I.45 and I saw the BCAL sign. I told my husband "Now that's who I want to work for". Several years later my dream came true. I worked in the US Corporate Office as Asst to John Story, then the Executive VP North America. The reality of working for BCAL was even better than the dream. We really were one big worldwide family. I remember our joy when we thought SAS was going to win the bidding war and our sadness when it didn't, since we knew our identity was going to disappear. I was on the last flight returning to Houston that the in-flight BCAL crew could wear their wonderful uniforms. We took photos, we cried. It was the end of an era. BCAL may no longer fly, but it lives in our hearts and always will. The people made the airline great and how could they not with Sir Adam at the helm.
Brian Clarke
I joined as Cabin Crew on ab initio 3, March 80. and stayed with BA after the merger until 98. Days as BCAL were by far the best. Went to easyJet as cabin crew trainer and left after 4 years then went to Royal Caribbean Cruiselines as Guest Services Manager sailing out of Miami. Would love to hear from anybody from the Great days of BCAL.
Tim Clarke
Thank you for the great memories. My first contact with BC was back in Feb.1977. I was flying in from Nairobi to Lagos. I was homesick and still had about two months before I could return to the States. As the Pan Am 707 was taxing to the gate, I remember slowly moving by a BC DC-10. It was dusk and the maintenance crew was preparing it for it's night flight. I just remember wanting to get on that plane and go home. It was the first time I had seen a BC but many had told me about the airline's wonderful reputation and service. It looked majestic with the familiar logo on the tail. I hope you keep the site
Clive Clemson
Some of the best and most memorable years of my life were spent working for BCAL from 71-79 in Traffic at LGW, in the latter years as a Redcap, a great airline and great people to work with, many of whom, like me, are overseas working for other airlines, the training we had in BR was second to none, this excellent Website is bound to attract a much wider audience in due course and I look forward to hearing from old friends.
Pat Cockell 06/12/08 Entry made by Pat's son, Nick
My Dad flew out of Gatwick for BCAL for many years until his retirement, and before that for BUA (before this he flew for Silver City based at Lydd). When he retired he was a captain (possibly a training captain) and I know that he flew to (amongst other places) US, S.America, Hong Kong, Bahrain and Africa. He was on 1-11's, VC-10's, 707's and lastly DC10's. Sadly he died of a heart attack in 2002, and some of his former colleagues attended the funeral. I know he would have loved the website, and often went to reunions.I have many memories associated with BUA/BCAL, and can recall as a child being allowed to accompany my Dad on the flight deck of a 1-11 to Glasgow and back - impossible to imagine now! He told us many outrageous stories of his travels, although he always took his job seriously, and loved flying. I'd love to know if anyone remembers him.....Nick's email is Nick Cockell
Neville Coleman
Just visited the site and brought back old memories. I joined BUA May 1968 in Traffic and then BCAL. Currently back in BA in Compliance at LGW and welcome opportunity to hear from anyone who remembers me.

I was a temp Traffic Officer at GLA for about four summers as a raw 17 year old. Gave me the taste for the Airline business. Worked for Air UK, Loganair, Manx Airlines, BA and now Travel2; where I still work with Carol Bone nee Devlin. So it was great to see her and Cath Turnbull nee Lang in Mansel Dinnis’s video! And thanks to Tony Elfverson for employing me for all those summers!

I signed on with BCAL when the non-stop service between Houston and London kicked off in 1977. We had maybe 10 agents in the office at that time. When I tell people I worked for BCAL, they always say what a great airline it was! Would love to hear from my ex-co-workers.
Linda & Ken Collyer
I joined BUA in 1964 and Ken in 1968. I started with lost property and then to staff records. Yes I was the one that probably turned your leave down!! Worked in the office for Derek Richardson (now with Excel (Sabre) and finally ended my days in the office where the Chapel at Gatwick is now situated. Holy ground and all that! Ken commenced with Loaders then lost property and finally Load Control. I am still at Gatwick with G4S which was the joining of Securicor and Group 4 together, still pushing the papers around but now on to computers!! Every time I turn a corner there is always an 'old' face and we can always go over the 'old' days and good times. Ken is now fully retired but does not have time to sit around. Either working in garden or garage making things i.e. bird tables, fencing etc. Love to hear from anyone that remembers us.
Alan Comber
Great to see the BCAL colours again! I joined in 1976 until the end - now BA. Keep on with the good memories.
Janice Connelly (now Friend)
Cabin crew 1973-1984, anyone remember the raffle?!! Still at LGW, now BAA. Loads of good memories, still regret leaving...best wishes to ex-colleagues and friends. Great idea for a web-site.

It is with sadness that we learn that John passed away on 2nd March 2003. Our sympathies go to his family and friends

Pre 72 Royal Navy, 73 - 74 Passenger Services, 74 - 83 Cargo B707 Loadmaster. 83 - 88 Load Control Ground Ops Training. 88 - 98 BA Load Control (Despatch) training. 98 - 03 Retired, Thank you Robert Ayling. We (Mary & John - yes still married to Mary, how she puts up with me is anybody’s guess!!!) still live in Crawley, but spend a lot of time on the Isle of Wight in my renovated Chalet/Cottage on the cliff tops overlooking the sea. Probably slide into the sea in 20 years or so. Have restored an old Triumph Classic Convertible which spends most of its running life on the IOW with me. Cheers, whose round is it anyway?

Having pestered Arnold Sheed each week for a job I finally joined BUA at LGW as a trainee/apprentice engineer in November 1964 just as all the other engineers were about to go on strike. I initially spent time in the Engine Bay with some real characters and learnt a lot, then into the Hangar environment first on Viscount’s and 1-11’s and then the Bristol Britannia and VC-10’s. I had lots of encouragement from the older engineers to get my Aircraft Maintenance Engineers Licence which I did at the age of 21 on the VC-10 Conway engine. Finally went on the Line in 1970 then back in the hangar on a new Base Maintenance shift system, 12 hour night shifts on 707 “D” checks not a lot of fun, left in July 1975 to join East African Airways in Nairobi. Throughout my time at BUA then BCAL I worked with some terrific engineers and learnt so much from them and I shall always fondly remember those days with a great airline and great people

I joined BUA from BOAC in 1968, which then became Caledonian / BUA, then BCAL. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Sales in the UK, as an Overseas Manager in Seychelles, Liberia, Italy, and Nigeria, - when the BA takeover happened. I continued overseas with BA in Middle East and Eastern Europe until 1996. Since then I have been working as an aviation consultant during which time my travels have taken me to Southern Africa, all over West Africa, Ireland, Russia & CIS, UAE, and China. I think this is a great Web site, which has prompted both renewals of old contacts and memories of a great airline and happy times.
Rebecca Cooper
ex hostie Gatwick based (1973-1976). Still in touch with a few of the girls.
Ian Corby
Joined BCAL in Oct'76 as F/O on 1-11's and ended up retiring on 22 Sept'99 as 747 Capt with BA.
Happiest time of my flying career, met my future wife who joined just before I did. Not sure if your aware but we have a flight, crew reunion every Sept, great way of seeing some of the old faces. Keep in touch. Ian Corby,

Joined Passenger Services in 1983 and left in 1988 due to the takeover. Worked on check-in and PSU then Flight Control and finally became an Assistant Supervisor. Worked for Servisair as a Supervisor for 10 months then moved to Air UK at LGW. I was a Duty Manager for Air UK when I left the airport in 1996 to become a Fitness Instructor. Those 5 years with B. Cal were 5 of the best years. A great company, the best bunch of people and the best training. Those years are sorely missed.
Phil Cornford
Joined Caledonian Airways March 1970 left BCAL October 1987.14 years in crewing and then passenger services. Best years of my life, great bunch of people. Never be another BCAL. Now with GB operations at LGW.
Jerry Cornish
I worked for BUA and then on to BCAL in Traffic Services and Reception from 1961 to 1979. Then moved on to IATA in Montreal from 1979-1991. I still reflect back to perhaps the best days of my life. We worked hard and had lots of fun. Particularly when aeroplanes still had propellers and then the swift transition to the jet age. Miss those days. Still in Canada just east of Toronto
Geoff Cornwell
I joined Caledonian Airways February 1969 after the demise of British Eagle. Worked at Sussex House with Wally Waterfield in Commercial Planning until Caledonian formed their own Flight Dispatch at Gatwick. Stayed in this department until the sad end. During this period was often to be found down the route especially Africa as I had responsibility for the African outstations regarding flight planning.
Also looked after our Kenya Airways contract so regularly in Nairobi. Spent an interesting 10 weeks in Luanda working for BCAT when we sold the two B707s to Angolan Airlines and subsequently went with BCAT to Turks and Caicos for a period looking at their operation. Had a very pleasant 6 month secondment to Passenger Services returning to Flight Dispatch again. Still doing the same now with BA based at Waterside, LHR but hoping that I might soon escape and find some interesting new projects to keep me out of trouble.
I have spent some wonderful times with BCAL and found some great friends. I have often been told that I should write a book with all my experiences. I doubt that I ever will but I find much pleasure reliving some of the memories. I have no regrets that I have spent such a large part of my life with BCAL.
Nigel Cotton
I joined BUA in 1970, then spent some 18 great years with BCAL through to 1988. Cargo, Ramp, CLAT, and many years in Ground Ops Personnel. 12 years on it is great to find this site, and I hope I might meet up with some of the team again
Andy Coupland
I spent an unforgettable few years in BCAL Planning from 1977 to 1981. My greatest claim to fame was to write the original discussion paper for the Board on "Main Deck Baggage"! A bit like owning-up to having invented BSE. Has anyone ever heard anything of J Roland Savoir from Houston? If you're out there, Roland, get in touch.
Bill Cox
I joined BCal in July 1983 and had five great years before being 'absorbed‘ by our big LHR neighbour. What fond memories I have of those days … difficult times though they were trying to fight the then governments expansion plans following BA privatisation. Does anyone remember ‘the Way Ahead‘ ? I spent my initial time working as Personnel Officer in Engineering and ended up supporting the assimilation of Flight and Cabin Crew into BA. I retired from BA in 2006 … all the best to all … Bill

I miss BCAL and all of you so much! Those were the days. I have such fond memories of my days with my BCAL family. I started in 1982 at LGW in PAX Services, then moved to the ticket office, and later to North Atlantic Routes in HQ down the road. I ended up in the Sales Office in Dallas and later I had my own one person CTO in the Dallas Galleria. I left once they closed all the US CTO's. I would love to hear from anyone who remembers me! I would greatly appreciate any help in contacting two ex-roommates who also worked for BCAL; Judith Dixon Anderson, (FA), and Gabby Graziani, (Pax Serv.) Thanks!

I joined the original Caledonian Airways as a Aircraft Maintenance Engineer-Radio in September 1966.They were the "good old days" of the DC7,Britannia,B707 and BAC111 days before the take-over of BUA. I left in February 1969 to join another UK independent. Would love to here from anyone of that era. When aviation was aviation, and not an accounts spread sheet!!!!
Seona Craig (nee Wooley)
I joined BUA in 1964 as a s/h typist to John Byrne, the then 'Traffic Manager' and after about 6 months I went over to 'Engineering to 'Smithie' - got fed up with him chasing me around the office - no, not really, but anyways moved up to the terminal after that on Check-In and from then on worked at VAT and in Reservations and was also a Training Officer.
Ian Crawford
I worked for BCal from 1975 to 1979 in Cargo Sales. My area was the Midlands and the South West/ South Wales. My immediate boss was Peter Davies at BCal LHR Cargo. I would love to hear from any of the old cargo team. They were the best. I ran into Brian Day, Ex BCal route development Manager for South America a few years ago, but have now lost touch. I now live in S. Wales, running my own freight forwarding company. Regards to all.
Nick Crawford
I joined Caledonian Airways in July 1970 in the Crewing Dept under the watchful eye of Derek Epps, Chris Selmes and Bob (sweetheart) Simmonds! After many years of life in Crewing and three very interesting years working in EDI on the ramp I still find myself commuting the M25 from my home in Horsham and currently work In Ops Control in Waterside for BA.
What great memories with BCAL from those early days in Sussex House then the terrapins at LGW and I am still working with some fellow BCAL oldies, Tony (Fella) Roberts, Tony Rice, Alan Boyce and Martyn Gurton and keep up with others outside. Great website for a great Airline.
Marlene Crawley
Hello to all the ex-BCAL folk out there who I may have known over the years.
Tony Creasey and Dianne Creasey (Withey)
At last we have got round to adding to the ever growing list of 'BCAL' people on the Website. Dianne was Caledonian joining in 1963 and I joined in Caledonian/BUA in 1971. We were both in Aircrew Records with BCAL and enjoyed working with a great team. I then spent a number of years with 'BA' finally escaping in May 2009. We have a most appropriate email address too.
John Creton
Joined BUA in 1968 (anyone got a copy of the "Gatwick fragment"?) and did most of the jobs in cargo -clean and dirty- right through till 1990 three years after one too many takeovers. So many good times.
Graham Crewe I've worked for 4 airlines since the merge-over, none compare!
Suzanne Cross (now O'Brien)
I worked with B Cal from 1985 to 1988 in Passenger Services at LGW. I then moved to Aer Lingus, firstly at LGW then LHR. My training at B Cal has certainly stood to me throughout the years! Moved back to Dublin with EI in 1997 in Media Relations and only left the airline business this year. I loved working with B Cal and remember my times fondly. It is amazing where B Cal people pop up and have met all sorts of people in strange places throughout the world! Would love to hear from anyone out there who remembers me! am going to forward details of the site to all the folks that I am still in contact with
Paul Crowther BCAL Cargo LHR 1976-1979

Howdy from Texas. I used to work in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Dallas Ft Worth. My colleagues were Phil Bowell, Trevor Warburton. How much I miss BCAL. Now working in Houston as Sales Manager for Gulf Air. Anyone remember me , love to hear from you.

I joined BUA as a passenger handling weekender in 1967. What a great job for a 17yr old, meeting and boarding flights, making tannoys. Such fun and what a fantastic social life, someone always had a party. 1968 turned full-time and became a redcap, left in 1970 to become a teacher but had met my bride to be - Marilyn White, and it wasnt long before I was back. Stayed to the takeover then left BA in Oct 1988 to go play with biz jets. Now with Virgin Atlantic in Operations, still married to my beautiful Marilyn and living in the house we moved into on our wedding day in 1974.
