Captain Howard Mansell
Sadly Howard passed away on 3rd August 2019 after a long brave battle with cancer. My sincere condolences to his family, friends and former colleagues. Howard was a popular member of the BCAL fleet and served on BAC 1-11, B707, DC-10 & B747 aircraft, eventually becoming part of the training fleet.
From John Fairclough
Howard left the R.A.F. to join BCAL in 1975 and was a respected figure to all who knew him. He married Pella, whom he had met as a cabin attendant and they had two beautiful children, Amy and Matt.
When British Airways merged with BCal in 1988, Howard took the decision to leave the company and furthered his career in Oman, Anchorage, Amsterdam and Singapore. He continued to exercise his training skills up until the end in simulator work.
He will be especially missed by me as a true friend and I saw him up until the end and greatly admired his courage and resolve, refusing to give up until the very end. Pella tells me that last Friday and Saturday (2nd / 3rd Aug) were happy days and Howard passed away peacefully.

We were friends and colleagues in BCal and, like a few others, we both left B.A. shortly after the takeover, for pastures new. Our paths converged again about six years ago at Boeing LGW where we have worked from time to time as instructors on the 787. Howard was a fine airman, a good friend and a thoroughly good bloke. It was a pleasure and a privilege to have been his friend.

Howard's service was held on 21st August 2019 at St Andrew and Mary the Virgin Parish Church in Fletching, East Sussex.
The family kindly invited Howard's friends and colleagues to join them in celebrating his life
The Captain's Playground from Pella Mansell
Myself, Amy and Matt would firstly like to say thank you all so much for coming to Howard’s memorial service last August. It was a hugely emotional day for us and it was so lovely to see so many familiar faces there and afterwards enjoying a drink or two at the Griffin, which Howard would have so loved.
The donations that were given towards the charity FRANCO, that helps disadvantaged people in South Africa and was close to Howard's heart, surpassed all our expectations. We asked FRANCO to keep their eye out for a cause that helped young vulnerable children, and as fate would have it they were approached by a school in the township whose playground was deemed unsafe and needed upgrading. I am very proud to say that we were able to support the school and the playground has been upgraded with part of the funds from Howard's memorial. The children are now happily playing in a safe and happy environment, which is now lovingly referred to as the ‘Captain's Playground’. Attached are some images that Amy took when she visited the school and children in South Africa last month. We are currently having a plaque and a sign commissioned in loving memory of Howard.
I would like to thank you all once again for all your generosity to the charity and to thank you all for your lovely tributes to Howard - an amazing husband, father, pilot and friend.
Best wishes, Pella
