A look back at Engineering in
Around 400 staff work in the Line Maintenance at Gatwick, and they have the task on ensuring the aircraft are ready for service.
When an aircraft arrives at Gatwick, Line Maintenance are responsible for cleaning, refuelling, checking oils and fluids, carrying out any defect rectification, inspections and pre-departure checks. They carry out checks up to B, every 300 hours.
Line Maintenance staff comprise of many trades including airframe, engine, electrical, instrument, radar and radio, and licensed engineers and Supervisors who can sign off on defect repairs. The Supervisors control the work, and also the cleaners, marshaller-drivers and of course liaise with Movement Control, keeping them up to date on aircraft serviceability.
Line Maintenance also look after cabin configuration changes, a task which can sometimes takes longer than many of the defects they repair.
