An Airwork Viking had to return to Blackbushe after suffering a severe oil leak from its starboard engine soon after take-off on 15
August 1954. On final approach, G-AIXS came down 135 yards short of the runway, all 35 passengers and crew escaped before fire destroyed the aircraft. Undaunted, half of the passengers boarded a replacement aircraft and headed off to Nice that afternoon.
