Airwork's Advertising History
Airwork were formed on 1st October 1928 by Alan Muntz and Nigel Norman. They had £45,000 in capital; which is about £1.5million in 2014 give or take a bit, but it was a significant sum.
They did not start airline operations straight away but concentrated on supplying and maintaining aircraft but in their company they left it open, with the statement of their company activities.
"manufacturers of and dealers in aeroplanes, flying machines, airships and aerial conveyances of all kinds, and the component parts there-of, garage and hangar keepers, aerodrome proprietors, cinematograph proprietors and film makers, etc"
Over the years Airwork grew to become one of the largest aviation enterprises in the world, with many divisions that encompassed just about everything that supported aviation.
They pushed hard for work after the war, when the ban on civil aviation was lifted and won many contracts to refurbish many war surplus aircraft. And in 1946 they started to operate charter services in their own right. From here they went from strength to strength, flying troops, many government contacts, charters worldwide and of course founding the Safari Services into Africa with Hunting-Clan.
One small blip, the failure of the Airwork Atlantic cargo service, but this was in the main due to support for state airlines. But they did carry Donald Campbell's Bluebird while they were operating. After testing and trials, few weeks later, Campbell set a new world speed record on Lake Mead of 216mph.
But the more I look into Airwork, the more I can see parallels to BCal's operations; highly professional, never shying away from new challenges and being highly regarded the world over.....Airwork were after all the starting point for BCal's lineage.
I hope you enjoy the advertising from this global aviation player.
