The BAC 1-11
The Series 200
The 1-11 had been the back bone of the short haul fleet from the days of BUA when it started to take over from the Viscounts. BUA were the launch customer for the 1-11  and placed an order for 10 aircraft. A huge step forward for an independent airline and the start of a long run of 1-11 production for BAC too.

BUA's pilots, crew and engineers took part in many aspects of the 1-11 test programme, as did many of BUA's aircraft, before they were delivered.

The first BUA scheduled 1-11 service was made on 9th April 1965 to Genoa, with G-ASJJ, and 1-11's would soon be flying many of BUA's routes around Europe and to package holiday destinations in the Med.

The 1-11 series 200's would go onto serve BCal for many years, and the fleet changed many times, though the last to leave BCal's fleet went in June 1982, after 16 years service, and it was one of BUA's original fleet, G-ASJE. The departure of JE ended 16 years of continuous series 200 operations.

Caledonian's 1-11 fleet would start with the 1-11 Series 500.

BCal's 1-11 fleet were destined to be replaced, new noise regulations and the availability of more economical aircraft, had seen an order placed for the Airbus A320, though that never quite made it into their fleet, thus the 1-11-200 and the 500 completed 23 years of BCal service.
